Give Amsterdam the gaps: a bridge you stop on for no reason, a brown café you duck into, an hour on a bench while the canal goes gold. The canal belt crosses on foot in half an hour, so this plan asks very little of you. The centre is flat and walkable, but it belongs to cyclists: look both ways twice and keep out of the red lanes. Good to know: April to early June and September bring long light and terraces worth sitting on. Winter is dark by mid-afternoon and argues for the indoor anchors, and rain can arrive in any month.

## Day 1 — The canal belt and the Jordaan, on foot

### Anchor: De Negen Straatjes

*The Nine Streets, then a drift into the Jordaan*

Start where the city is prettiest and least in a hurry. The Nine Streets stitch the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht together with small independent shops, bookshops and bridges, and a café whenever one of you wants coffee. When they run out, cross the Prinsengracht into the Jordaan: narrow houses, flower boxes, quiet courtyards. Arrive late afternoon, when the light runs low along the water and the gables turn amber. You'll pass the Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House; if you want to go inside the house, its timed tickets release online in advance, so decide before you travel.

### Backup: Begijnhof

*a hidden courtyard instead*

When the shopping streets wear thin, slip through the gate off the Spui into the Begijnhof, a medieval courtyard of houses around a green, one of them among the oldest wooden houses in the city. It is startlingly quiet ten metres from the crowds, and free. People live here, so keep your voices low; the hush is the whole point.

### Eat & rest

Let the evening drift into a brown café, Amsterdam's best institution for two: dark wood, low light, small tables and nobody rushing you out. The Jordaan has the best of them \(see the list below\).

*Everything today sits within a 20-minute walk. Flat shoes for the cobbles, and take your photos from the bridges, never a bike lane.*

## Day 2 — Museumplein: the Rijksmuseum and a park afternoon

### Anchor: Rijksmuseum

The morning belongs to the Rijksmuseum, the Dutch national museum and the best indoor hours in the city. Its Gallery of Honour runs the Golden Age down one long room: Vermeer's quiet interiors, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt's Night Watch waiting at the end. The trick for two is to refuse to see it all. Take that gallery plus one wing you both care about, delftware and dollhouses, ship models or the Asian pavilion, then stop. Two well-spent hours beat four resentful ones. Book a timed ticket online; walk-up entry is unreliable on weekends and wet days.

### Backup: Van Gogh Museum

Across the Museumplein, the Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of his work anywhere, hung as one chronological arc through his life: smaller, more focused and kinder to tired legs. Entry is strictly timed with online tickets, so choose it in advance rather than swapping on the day.

### Eat & rest

Walk it off in the Vondelpark next door, where ponds, long lawns and spring-to-autumn terrace cafés make an afternoon vanish. Dinner is in De Pijp, around the Albert Cuyp Market, or on the calmer Haarlemmerdijk.

*Go at opening or in the last two hours; midday is the crush. The Museumplein is a tram ride or 25-minute walk from the centre, and big bags go in the cloakroom.*

## Day 3 — An evening on the water

### Anchor: Magere Brug

*The Skinny Bridge and a canal cruise after dark*

Save the water for last. Walk the Amstel embankment to the Magere Brug, the white wooden drawbridge, in the last daylight, and stay while its small lights come on. Then get on the canals rather than beside them. An evening boat through the canal belt is the one piece of tourist infrastructure worth every euro: lit gables, bridges strung with lights, the whole city slowed to the pace of the water. Boats range from big glass-roofed ones to small open ones with a dozen seats. Book a small one for a sunset or after-dark departure.

### Backup: Museum Van Loon

*inside a canal house instead*

Rain on the last day? Trade the canal view for a canal house. Museum Van Loon is a preserved patrician home of family portraits and period rooms, and behind it waits something almost nobody expects: a formal garden with a coach house. One unhurried hour, just the right size for a final day.

### Eat & rest

From late April to August the light holds so late that dinner at eight is still dinner in daylight. Linger in a small Jordaan kitchen, then finish where you started: a brown café, a genever, a very small table, no further plans.

*Boat times follow the light: late afternoon in winter, closer to ten in midsummer. Canal boats are open to the weather at both ends, so bring a layer.*

## Rainy-day backup \(indoors, and genuinely good\)

Rain is a normal condition here, and the city has more good indoor hours than a weekend can use. Beyond the museums above:

- Rembrandt House Museum \(Jodenbreestraat\): the house where Rembrandt lived and worked, reconstructed with his studio and printing press.
- De Hallen \(Oud-West\): a covered former tram depot with food stalls, a cinema and shops, for a wet afternoon without a museum.

## Where to eat and drink

- Café 't Smalle \(Egelantiersgracht\): a canal-side terrace for fine days and a tiny 18th-century interior for rain.
- Café Papeneiland \(Prinsengracht at the Brouwersgracht\): pouring since the 1600s, on one of the prettiest corners in the city.
- Café Hoppe \(Spui\): in business since 1670, mostly standing, always busy.
- Winkel 43 \(Noordermarkt\): city-famous Dutch apple pie. Expect a queue on market days and carry it to a canal bench.
- Albert Cuyp Market \(De Pijp\): running since 1905. Graze stroopwafels and herring late morning; closed Sundays.
- Good restaurants here are small and book out Thursday to Saturday. Agree on the two dinners you both care about, reserve those before you fly, and leave the rest to the walk.
