A lit bridge, water on both sides, a line of arches glowing down the canal: Amsterdam hands you a proposal stage that needs no booking, no budget and no permission. Only two things can spoil it, and both are predictable. Crowds: a bridge that is empty at ten on a Tuesday evening is a scrum at eight on a Saturday. Weather: rain arrives sideways off the water. So each day has one job. Tonight you scout. Tomorrow you ask. The day after, you do nothing but be engaged. Every step has a version that works in the rain. Good to know: the blue hour moves from about half past five in winter to nearly ten in midsummer, so look up sunset for your dates, and confirm boat and venue times before you go.

## Day 1 — Arrive, and scout without looking like you are scouting

### Anchor: Reguliersgracht

*Walk the three candidate spots at the hour you would use them*

To your partner it is a romantic stroll. To you it is reconnaissance. Three spots do most of the work, all within half an hour of each other on foot: the Reguliersgracht crossing at the Herengracht, where seven lit arches line up in the water; the Magere Brug, the white drawbridge over the Amstel; and the Brouwersgracht corner by Café Papeneiland. Walk them at the hour you plan to use and watch the dull details: who is standing there, where the bikes come from, which way the wind blows. Choose one and a fallback. Then stop thinking about it.

### Backup: Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam

*if it is already raining: scout indoors*

Rained off? Test the indoor option instead. The Hortus Botanicus, a 17th-century garden and one of the oldest in the world, keeps humid glasshouses and a butterfly house that feel a continent away from a Dutch downpour, with quiet corners no bridge can offer. Go in daylight, walk the palm house, and ask yourself whether you could picture kneeling there.

### Eat & rest

Keep tonight small so tomorrow lands. Settle into a Jordaan brown café, the tiny 18th-century room at Café 't Smalle or Papeneiland on the corner you just scouted, and don't make tonight the night just because the light is nice.

*Cyclists own the red lane on every bridge, so stand at the railing on the pavement side. The ring flies in your carry-on and rides in a pocket that closes.*

## Day 2 — The day you do it

### Anchor: Magere Brug

*The bridge at the blue hour — or a boat, if you want the privacy*

One decision matters today: bridge or boat. The bridge happens in the twenty or thirty minutes after sunset, lamps lit and the sky still deep blue. Aim for a weekday, arrive fifteen minutes early to see who else is there, and keep the fallback in mind. The Magere Brug gives you room to stand clear of everyone. The boat buys total privacy: a small private charter with a skipper through the lit canal belt, covered and heated in winter, the one outdoor plan a storm cannot cancel. Book a few weeks ahead and tell them what it is for.

### Backup: A'DAM Lookout

*if the weather is genuinely violent: get above it*

When the rain turns horizontal, go up. A'DAM Lookout crowns the tower across the IJ from Centraal Station, a short ferry ride from behind the station, and its enclosed deck lays the whole lit city out below you with a roof overhead. Head for the western windows and let the weather be somebody else's problem.

### Eat & rest

Book dinner for afterwards; nobody enjoys a tasting menu with a ring in their pocket. Somewhere small in the Jordaan or on the Haarlemmerdijk suits the night, or end with a genever at Wynand Fockink, the tasting room behind the Dam pouring since 1679.

*Weather here turns within the hour, so keep both plans alive until evening. For photos, brief a distant photographer, the skipper or a stranger; never prop a phone on a canal railing.*

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — The day after

### Anchor: Brouwersgracht

*A slow morning, daylight photographs, and the phone calls*

Nobody plans the day after, and it is the day you will actually talk. Start with Dutch apple pie at Winkel 43 on the Noordermarkt, then walk the Brouwersgracht in daylight, past converted warehouses and houseboats. This is where you take the photos you will send: no crowd, ring visible, both of you rested. The Bloemenmarkt is ten minutes away for flowers; last night's bridge, lights off, is twenty. Leave the afternoon empty. The calls take longer than you think, and everyone wants the story twice.

### Backup: Museum Van Loon

*a canal house, if it is wet again*

Wet again? Step inside one of the houses you have been admiring. Museum Van Loon is a preserved patrician canal house of period rooms, family portraits and a grand staircase, with a formal garden and coach house hidden behind it. A warm, quiet hour, right-sized for a morning when neither of you wants a plan.

### Eat & rest

Celebrate without a month of notice in De Pijp, around the Albert Cuyp Market, or on the calmer Haarlemmerstraat. If it pours, De Hallen in Oud-West, a former tram depot with a food hall and cinema, soaks up the afternoon.

*Flying home today? The Brouwersgracht is a fifteen-minute walk from Centraal Station. And back up the photos somewhere other than the phone they are on.*

## The spots, with their trade-offs

Walk at least two before you choose.

- Reguliersgracht at the Herengracht: the seven-bridges view, lit and reflected after dark. The most dramatic photograph, so the likeliest to have an audience; best on a weekday, just after sunset.
- Magere Brug \(the Skinny Bridge\): real standing room away from the traffic lane. Calmer than the Reguliersgracht, more exposed to wind off the Amstel.
- Brouwersgracht at the Prinsengracht: a residential corner, the one most likely to be empty, with a warm café ten steps away when it is done.
- A small private boat: total privacy, lit gabled houses sliding past, and the only fully weatherproof outdoor option.
- Hortus Botanicus: the indoor, daytime, no-crowd answer, warmest on a weekday morning.
- Skip the Begijnhof. The courtyard off the Spui is lovely, and it is also somebody's home: a proposal there comes with an audience of residents.

## If it rains \(plan for it, not against it\)

The boat, A'DAM Lookout, the Hortus and Van Loon all shrug off rain. Two more:

- Pathé Tuschinski \(Reguliersbreestraat\): a 1921 Art Deco picture palace, an occasion in itself; films screen in their original language.
- Café 't Smalle: a candlelit 18th-century room and a table by the window, a perfectly good place to change your life.

## Practical notes nobody tells you

- Moving the night from Saturday to Tuesday does more for privacy than any other decision here.
- Tell the restaurant when you book, not on arrival. A small dining room can do something lovely with notice and nothing without.
- Planning it in secret? Bring one trusted friend in on the fallback bridge, the boat and the dinner booking, lock those three, and leave everything else loose.
