Athens rewards couples who time their days to the light: first sun on the Parthenon's marble, Plaka's lanes glowing after dark, the floodlit rock seen from a rooftop, drink in hand. The center is compact enough to cover on foot, so this plan asks for one anchor a day and gives the rest to wandering and long dinners. Each day has a quieter backup for when the heat or the crowds argue for something calmer, and the last evening leaves the ruins behind for a marina in Piraeus.

## Day 1 — The Acropolis, then Plaka after dark

### Anchor: Acropolis of Athens

*Anchor — the Acropolis, timed for the light*

Go early, for the cooler air and for the moment the Parthenon's marble catches the day's first direct light, before the plateau fills. Then take the slow lap: the Erechtheion's carved caryatids, and views over the whole city from the edge of the rock. There is very little shade up top, so carry water and sun protection. A combined ticket covering the Acropolis and several nearby sites pays off if you'll see more than one. In the afternoon, drift down into Plaka, whose narrow lanes and small squares turn charming as the day-trippers thin toward evening.

### Backup: Acropolis Museum

When the rock is too hot or too crowded, head to the Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill. Its glass-walled galleries hold the sculptures and friezes taken down from the site, in air-conditioned calm, with the Acropolis itself visible through the windows above you. It is a short walk from the Acropolis entrance; budget about an hour and a half.

### Eat & rest

Stay in Plaka for dinner, where taverna tables spill onto the cobblestones under strings of lights. Walk until a menu and a quiet corner both look right.

## Day 2 — Ancient Agora and a rooftop sunset

### Anchor: Ancient Agora of Athens

*Anchor — the Ancient Agora, then a rooftop at sunset*

Walk the marketplace of classical Athens, where Socrates is said to have debated among these same stones. The Ancient Agora is quieter and greener than the Acropolis, with the Temple of Hephaestus at one end and the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, now a small museum, at the other. Shaded paths and olive trees make it an easy midday visit, and the combined Acropolis ticket usually covers it. Before sunset, find a rooftop bar around Monastiraki or Plaka. The skyline is low, so a few stories up gives you the whole rock as its floodlights come on.

### Backup: Monastiraki Flea Market

Ruins-fatigue setting in? Swap the Agora for the Monastiraki flea market, a sprawl of antiques, records and secondhand oddities spilling out from the square of the same name. It is livelier and looser, and close enough to the rooftop bars that the evening stays the same. Weekend mornings are busiest, and most stalls expect you to bargain.

### Eat & rest

Eat in Monastiraki and Psyrri, among souvlaki counters and mezedopoleia, ordering several small plates between you instead of a main each.

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — A hill for the view, an evening by the sea

### Anchor: Lycabettus Hill

Climb Lycabettus Hill, or ride the funicular and save your legs, to the highest point in central Athens, where for once the Acropolis sits below you. Late afternoon is quiet enough to feel like your own lookout, and the summit chapel and small café give you reasons to linger. For the last evening, take the short metro ride to Piraeus and walk Mikrolimano, the small marina where fish tavernas set tables right beside the bobbing boats. Go later, once it cools, and trade ruins for open water and the day's catch.

### Backup: National Garden

If a climb feels like too much on the last day, wander the National Garden behind the Greek Parliament: shaded, winding paths, small ponds and a duck pond café, right downtown. It is free, with entrances along Vasilissis Amalias and Vasilissis Sofias avenues.

### Eat & rest

If Piraeus feels too far on the last night, stay near the Acropolis in Koukaki, where small modern Greek kitchens sit a short walk from most central hotels.

Day reference: 3

## Rainy-day and heat-of-the-day indoor backups

Indoor options that work regardless of weather:

- National Archaeological Museum — one of the great collections of ancient Greek art, well outside the main tourist crush.
- Benaki Museum — Greek history and art across several eras, in a converted neoclassical mansion.
- The Acropolis Museum \(Day 1\) and the Stoa of Attalos museum in the Agora \(Day 2\) double as cool, quick breaks.

## Where to eat and drink

- Plaka for lights on the cobblestones, Monastiraki and Psyrri for shared plates, then Mikrolimano or Koukaki for the finale.
- Settle between you which morning gets the early alarm for the Acropolis and whether the last night belongs to the sea or to Koukaki. Everything else can stay loose.
