In Barcelona, medieval alleys, Gaudí's strangest buildings and a real Mediterranean beach sit within an afternoon's walk of each other, so a weekend for two gets all three. Each day builds around one architectural anchor, then lets a beach or a hilltop view slow the pace before an evening of the long, unhurried tapas crawl Barcelona does so well. Every day has an easy backup too. Between the heat, the crowds at the big sights and how good it feels to just keep walking, the best plans here stay loose.

## Day 1 — The Gothic Quarter, then dusk on Las Ramblas

### Anchor: Barri Gòtic

*Anchor — the Gothic Quarter on foot*

Get lost on purpose in the Barri Gòtic, where narrow stone lanes open onto small squares and the cathedral rises suddenly above the rooftops. There is no efficient route, and that is the pleasure: double back, find the courtyard you both missed, and stop for a drink under the palms of the Plaça Reial. Wear shoes made for uneven cobblestones. As the light fades, walk the fifteen minutes of Las Ramblas toward the harbor, when street performers, closing flower stalls and the thickening evening crowd give the boulevard its best hour.

### Backup: Palau de la Música Catalana

Trade the wander for one astonishing room. A short walk from the Gothic Quarter, the Palau de la Música Catalana is a modernist concert hall whose stained-glass skylight and tiled columns make the interior a sight in itself, and a short guided visit gives you twenty minutes inside without spending the afternoon. Visits run on a schedule, so check times before you walk over.

### Eat & rest

Follow the lanes from the cathedral toward El Born, thick with small tapas bars, and stop wherever a menu catches your eye. No booking needed.

## Day 2 — Gaudí in the morning, the beach in the afternoon

### Anchor: Sagrada Família

Photographs never quite prepare you for the Sagrada Família: light pouring through stained glass onto columns meant to feel like a forest canopy. Book a timed ticket well in advance; it is the one reservation this weekend worth locking early. Allow about an hour and a half inside, plus the optional tower elevator for the view. Then ride the metro a straight couple of stops \(or walk about 45 minutes\) down to Barceloneta, the old fishing quarter, for a few unstructured hours on the sand. Bring sunscreen in any season.

### Backup: Casa Batlló

If the basilica's time slots don't fit, see Gaudí at human scale at Casa Batlló on the Passeig de Gràcia, with undulating balconies and a rooftop like a dragon's spine. It is a faster visit in the same Eixample district. A timed entry helps here too, though same-day tickets turn up more often.

### Eat & rest

Stay in Barceloneta for dinner. The seafront restaurants cook rice and fideuà for sharing, and a table facing the sea is the right close to a beach day.

## Day 3 — Park Güell and a hillside view

### Anchor: Park Güell

Spend the morning among Park Güell's mosaic terraces, curving stone viaducts and the wide plaza over the city you already know from photos. The monumental zone needs a timed ticket; the free outer areas carry the same strangeness. It is uphill and sunny, so go early with water. Later, climb to the Bunkers del Carmel, a former anti-aircraft post with a sweeping view over the rooftops to the sea. Entry is free, but the site is fenced and access tightens at busy times, so treat it as a daytime viewpoint. The hike up from transit is steep and shadeless.

### Backup: Bunkers del Carmel

*Easy backup — skip the monumental zone, keep the view*

Timed entry sold out, or legs done? Skip the park and head straight for the Bunkers del Carmel. It costs nothing, and the panorama is arguably the better of the two. A taxi earns its fare here, since public transit gets you close but not all the way.

### Eat & rest

For the final dinner, drop down into Gràcia, just below Park Güell, where small squares and unpretentious kitchens give the city a village feel before the flight home.

## Rainy-day indoor backups

Weather-proof options that hold up regardless of conditions:

- Barcelona Cathedral — the Gothic Quarter's centerpiece, with a quiet cloister garden inside.
- Museu Picasso — a cluster of medieval palaces in El Born, tracing Picasso's early years in the city.
- The Palau de la Música and Casa Batlló from Days 1 and 2 are fully indoors, too.

## Where to eat and drink

- Three nights, three moods: El Born's tapas lanes, a sea-view table in Barceloneta, then Gràcia's quiet squares.
- Lock the Sagrada Família slot together before you go, decide over coffee whether Park Güell earns a ticket, and leave every dinner to the walk.
