Belgrade saves its best for golden hour: the sun sinking where the Sava meets the Danube, then a long dinner, a glass of rakija and nowhere else to be. The old core of the fortress, Knez Mihailova, Dorćol and Skadarlija is compact and walkable, and only Day 3's hop across the bridge to Zemun calls for a taxi or rideshare. Good to know: summers run hot, so the plan leans on mornings and golden-hour evenings and saves the bright middle of the day for shade, wine or somewhere cool indoors.

## Day 1 — The fortress and a river sunset

### Anchor: Belgrade Fortress

Let Knez Mihailova, the grand pedestrian promenade of 19th-century mansions, cafes and street musicians, carry you straight into Kalemegdan Park and the fortress. Shaded paths and old stone ramparts lead to the city's signature view, where the Sava meets the Danube. Be at the walls by the Pobednik \(Victor\) Monument in late afternoon, as the rivers, bridges and New Belgrade skyline catch the last light. The park is free and open daily; arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to claim a spot on the bastions.

### Backup: Pobednik \(Victor\) Monument

*just the upper-town walls*

If the heat or your feet object, skip the deeper park loop and head straight for the Upper Town ramparts by the Victor Monument: one viewpoint, one bench, the same wide river panorama.

### Eat & rest

Reserve well ahead for Salon 1905, inside the Art Nouveau Geozavod building near the fortress: a set tasting menu and a wine list built around Serbian regions. Before sunset, slow down over coffee along Knez Mihailova.

*Knez Mihailova into Kalemegdan is a flat stroll of roughly a kilometer. Take it at a wander, not a march.*

## Day 2 — Dorćol by day, Skadarlija by night

### Anchor: Pržionica

*a slow wander through Dorćol*

Dorćol is Belgrade's quietly romantic side: leafy low streets, independent boutiques, design-forward cafes and terraces made for people-watching. Start with a proper coffee at Pržionica on Dobračina, the minimalist roastery widely credited with starting the city's specialty-coffee scene, then let the grid pull you along at whatever pace suits you. It's a neighborhood built for doing very little together, well.

### Backup: Proces

*a wine-bar afternoon*

Rather anchor the day on a glass than a walk? Proces is an intimate Dorćol-area wine bar pouring natural and lesser-known Serbian wines, with small plates and staff who'll happily steer you to bottles you won't find at home. An afternoon pour here slides easily into evening.

### Eat & rest

Tonight is Skadarlija, the cobblestoned quarter of old kafanas. Tri Šešira, open since 1864, means Serbian grills and live tamburica; reserve on weekends. For something refined, Iva New Balkan Cuisine in Upper Dorćol, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, serves modern Balkan tasting menus. It is small, so book ahead.

*Dorćol borders Kalemegdan and Knez Mihailova, so it's all on foot. No tickets, no schedule: treat the midday heat as permission to sit longer over coffee.*

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — Zemun, the tower, and the Danube quay

### Anchor: Gardoš \(Millennium\) Tower

*Gardoš Tower and the Zemun riverfront*

Cross to Zemun, the former Austro-Hungarian riverside town folded into Belgrade, and climb its cobbled lanes up Gardoš hill to the Millennium Tower. The top gives a 360-degree sweep of the Danube, red rooftops and the Belgrade skyline: the city's other great golden-hour view. Go in late afternoon, then drift down to the quay as the light goes soft. The hill is steep in places, so wear comfortable shoes, and check the tower's seasonal hours before you cross.

### Backup: Zemun quay

*skip the climb, keep the quay*

If the hill or the heat is too much, stay on the Zemun quay: flat, shaded in stretches and lined with cafes and bars spilling toward the water. One slow loop with a drink in hand gives you most of the romance and none of the steps.

### Eat & rest

Toast the last evening at The Roof atop the Prezident Palace hotel, with Danube-and-skyline views and golden-hour cocktails. Then dine back on the Belgrade side at Beton Hala, the converted warehouse strip on the Sava, where Toro Latin Gastro Bar serves pan-Latin plates with a front-row river view. Walk the lit Sava promenade after.

*Zemun is a 15–20 minute taxi or rideshare from the old town, or a long scenic walk along the Danube. If the tower is closed, the quay is a fine consolation.*

## Rainy day or heat-of-the-afternoon backup \(indoors\)

Belgrade summers run hot, with the odd fast-moving afternoon storm. Keep these cool indoor options handy:

- Temple of Saint Sava \(Vračar\): one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, with a glittering crypt of gold-and-blue Murano-glass mosaics. Free, open daily, and worth an unhurried hour.
- Pržionica and Proces in Dorćol: made for waiting out heat or a downpour, over a slow second coffee or a natural-wine flight and a board.

## Where to eat and drink

- Book before you arrive: Salon 1905 \(well ahead\), Iva New Balkan Cuisine \(small\) and a Skadarlija kafana like Tri Šešira on a weekend. Keep coffees and walk-ins loose.
- Then decide together which two sunsets you will chase \(the fortress walls, Gardoš Tower or The Roof\) and let each day bend around them.
