Berlin runs its trains all night at the weekend, and its whole after-dark culture assumes you'll be out late with no dinner reservation in the way. The city is enormous and its neighbourhoods feel like different cities, so budget real transit time between them rather than assuming you can walk it. Days leave room for the group to split and reconvene; nights belong to Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg, the districts that do them best. Agree a fallback meeting point and time before splitting up in any big venue: phone signal in packed basement clubs is not reliable.

## Day 1 — East Side Gallery, then Friedrichshain after dark

### Anchor: East Side Gallery

Start with over a kilometre of history in paint. The East Side Gallery, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, runs along the Spree covered in murals by artists from around the world, painted in the years after it fell. No ticket, no queue, any pace. Cross the Oberbaumbrücke at the far end and you're in Kreuzberg. Otherwise stay in Friedrichshain and head for Boxhagener Platz and Simon-Dach-Straße, a dense grid of casual bars, cheap eats and beer gardens where nothing needs booking and the group can drift between three bars without a plan.

### Backup: Markthalle Neun

Raining, or food before bars? Markthalle Neun, a restored 19th-century market hall in Kreuzberg just across the river, sets rotating food stalls around long shared tables, which suits a group better than most sit-down restaurants. It also leaves you close to the same evening's nightlife.

### Eat & rest

Dinner is a graze: currywurst stands, döner shops open late, bars that take no reservations. Nobody has to commit to one place. Eat as you go, then pick a bar and stay.

*Warschauer Straße station is a short walk from the Gallery. Trains run all night on Friday and Saturday, so forget the last train home.*

## Day 2 — Tempelhofer Feld to spread out, Markthalle Neun to eat

### Anchor: Tempelhofer Feld

Tempelhofer Feld is a whole airport handed to the public: the runways and taxiways of the former Tempelhof Airport, now a park so large you can bike, skate, kite-surf on grass or claim a patch of tarmac far from anyone. There are no sights. Rent bikes or blades at a stand near the entrances and loop the old runways at your own speeds; it is flat and open enough to see across, so the group splits and regroups without losing anyone. Be as loud or as quiet as you like.

### Backup: Museum Island

Weather turned? Take the group to Museum Island, a cluster of major museums on an island in the Spree. The Neues Museum holds the bust of Nefertiti, the most famous object on the island, and the Altes Museum next door has classical antiquities for a second stop. Pick one museum and one collection rather than moving a big group through several buildings.

### Eat & rest

Dinner at Markthalle Neun, a short ride from Tempelhof: communal tables and rotating stalls, so everyone orders something different and still sits together. Its well-known street-food evening is on Thursdays, though the hall serves food on other days too.

*Paradestraße, Boddinstraße and Tempelhof U-Bahn stations serve the field, with rental stands near the main gates. Markthalle Neun is near Görlitzer Bahnhof.*

## Day 3 — Mauerpark, then a rooftop over Neukölln

### Anchor: Mauerpark

Mauerpark sits on a stretch of the Wall's former death strip, and its open-air amphitheatre hosts a long-running, unscripted public karaoke on Sundays from roughly spring to early autumn, weather permitting. It is great spectator sport whether or not anyone in your group dares to sing, and the Sunday flea market runs year-round. Finish up high at Klunkerkranich, a rooftop bar on a parking garage above a Neukölln shopping centre: deck chairs, a small garden, a wide view across the rooftops. Go in through the mall and up the lifts.

### Backup: Prater Garten

*a beer garden instead*

Not feeling the rooftop queue or the karaoke crowd? Prater Garten in Prenzlauer Berg is one of Berlin's oldest beer gardens: a big shaded courtyard of long communal benches, made for easy, no-booking evenings. The garden is a warm-weather draw, but the attached Gaststätte pours the same beer indoors year-round, so it holds up on a cold or rainy night.

### Eat & rest

On a Sunday, graze the flea market's street-food stalls; otherwise Prenzlauer Berg's casual cafés handle a slow final lunch. Klunkerkranich has its own bar and small food stalls, so the last night needs no separate dinner stop.

*Eberswalder Straße U-Bahn serves Mauerpark. Klunkerkranich sits above the Neukölln Arcaden, near Rathaus Neukölln U-Bahn.*

## Group logistics

A few things that make Berlin easier for a bigger group:

- Bike and blade rental at Tempelhofer Feld is by the hour with no booking for small numbers; larger groups should arrive earlier on weekends.
- Before you go, agree as a group which night is the big one and whether Sunday is for karaoke. Almost everything else here works without a booking, so leave it loose.

## Plan this trip with your group
