Gas lanterns, pastel facades and a harbor that turns gold at dusk: Charleston rewards a couple who slow down and walk. Leave room to linger over oysters and a glass of something cold. Rainbow Row, the Battery, the City Market and most of the restaurants below sit a stroll or a short ride apart, so the whole weekend is car-optional; at most you'll want a rideshare to the harbor dock on Day 3. Good to know: summers are hot and humid, so the plan front-loads mornings and evenings and saves midday for shade, wine or air conditioning.

## Day 1 — South of Broad, on foot

### Anchor: Rainbow Row

An arm-in-arm opening: pastel facades, gas lanterns, oak-shaded benches and the harbor where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet. Start at Rainbow Row, thirteen pastel Georgian houses on lower East Bay Street, then follow the waterfront path along East Battery to White Point Garden at the southern tip of the peninsula. Go in the morning before the heat builds, or late in the afternoon when the light softens.

### Backup: White Point Garden

*just the garden*

When the heat or your feet push back, skip the loop and head straight to White Point Garden. Sit under the oaks, watch the harbor, and let the afternoon pass at one bench instead of covering ground.

### Eat & rest

Brunch on the upstairs balcony at Poogan's Porch, a restored 19th-century home and one of the prettier daytime seats downtown. A few doors along Queen Street, Husk serves an ever-changing Southern menu in a restored Victorian; reserve dinner ahead, it fills up.

*The loop is roughly a mile of flat walking, so take it at a wander. White Point Garden is free and open daily until sunset, with benches the whole way.*

## Day 2 — Art, the market, and a wine-bar night

### Anchor: Gibbes Museum of Art

Depth without a full day indoors, and a cool, calm escape from the midday heat. The Gibbes is compact and well curated, one of the oldest galleries in the country, with a strong collection of American and Charleston-rooted art you can take in without museum fatigue. It's closed one day a week, so check the hours before you set out.

### Backup: Charleston City Market

*the City Market*

No ticket, no commitment. The City Market is a long covered hall through the historic district, packed with local makers, sweetgrass basket weavers and small bites: an easy place to lose an hour together out of the sun.

### Eat & rest

Make the evening about wine. Bin 152 on King Street is an intimate, candlelit bar from a husband-and-wife team, with a deep by-the-glass list, cheese and charcuterie. Then FIG, the seasonal Charleston standard from a James Beard–honored kitchen; it's evenings only and books up, so reserve well ahead.

*The Gibbes sits two blocks south of the City Market with no on-site parking, so arrive on foot or use a downtown garage.*

## Day 3 — A harbor sunset sail

### Anchor: Schooner Pride

Sea breeze, golden hour, often dolphins, and no schedule to keep once you're aboard. The Schooner Pride, a tall ship, glides out past the Battery, Fort Sumter and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as the skyline catches the last light. Sailings run seasonally, roughly spring through early fall; book ahead and aim for the sunset departure.

### Backup: The Rooftop at The Vendue

*a rooftop sunset instead*

If the sail is full or the weather turns, take sunset up to a rooftop. The Vendue's looks over Waterfront Park to the harbor and the bridge, and it's open daily. Arrive in the late afternoon and stay as the city starts to glow.

### Eat & rest

Stroll the Waterfront Park promenade to the Pineapple Fountain, free and lit at night. Dinner is Chez Nous \(6 Payne Court, Elliotborough\): tiny, no sign, no reservations, a handful of daily-changing Southern-French dishes. For a nightcap up high, Citrus Club atop The Dewberry \(21+\) wraps you in a 360-degree city panorama.

*The Pride docks near the South Carolina Aquarium, about a 10-minute rideshare from the historic core. Arrive early to board, and bring a light layer; it's breezier on the water.*

## Rainy day or heat-of-the-afternoon backup \(indoors\)

Summer afternoon thunderstorms pass quickly. When one rolls in, or the heat does:

- Take a slow second pass through the Gibbes, browse the covered City Market, or wait out the downpour at Bin 152 over a flight and a board of cheese.

## Where to eat

- Book Husk and FIG before you arrive, especially for a weekend, and keep brunch and walk-in spots loose. Chez Nous takes no reservations, so go early.
- Graft Wine Shop on Upper King pours an edited, natural-leaning list with small plates, a good night off the plan.
- Before you go, pick together the one dinner that is your splurge and lock it with the sail; everything else can stay a wander.
