Ten of you riding a steep old railway up Lookout Mountain, then losing an afternoon by the river — and the whole weekend costs a fraction of the same one in Nashville. That price is usually what decides whether the friend on a budget comes, and nothing in town is priced at a bride. Your flights will not cooperate with a Day 1, so the ideas start from the problems: a room that seats ten, one big outing, a block where everyone eats what they like, an hour by the river, an easy last morning. The friend who does not eat meat and the friend who is not drinking are looked after by where you go, not apologised for at the table. Good to know: the Walnut Street Bridge, closed for restoration since March 2025, reopens on Saturday 3 October 2026. Prices and hours move too, so confirm them before you lock dates.

## Rooms for a group — Rooms that actually seat a party your size

### Go here: Southside Social

The one room in town that holds all ten of you, facing the same thing, for a whole evening. Southside Social is a boutique bowling alley and restaurant on the Southside: ten lanes, four bars, a games room with pool, skee ball, ping pong, shuffleboard and giant Jenga, and a courtyard with cornhole. Drinking is optional, and the friend who is not drinking is probably winning. Everyone orders their own apps, tacos or pizza. It is closed Mondays; call 423-708-3280 to hold lanes for a set hour or to ask about anyone under 21.

### Or here: Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery

*Chattanooga Whiskey, in two very different sizes*

The local spirit, poured two ways. The Experimental Distillery runs an hour-long guided tour, right-sized for ten, and its tasting room pours flights and cocktails daily for walk-ins. The two-hour Full Proof tour at the riverfront site needs an advance reservation. Both are strictly 21-plus with valid, current photo ID. For a group, call 423-760-4333 instead of booking ten separate slots.

### Eat & rest

Base yourselves on the Southside around Main Street, old industrial buildings turned restaurants and bars, where the party can split for an hour and regroup on foot. The whiskey is the one stop that leaves a non-drinker out, so keep it short.

*Southside Social and the Experimental Distillery are a walk from each other and from most downtown hotels; the riverfront site is its own trip. Saturday-night lanes go first.*

## The one big thing — The one thing worth building the weekend around

### Go here: Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

*Up Lookout Mountain on the Incline Railway*

The view from every Chattanooga postcard, reached the old-fashioned way. The Incline Railway climbs Lookout Mountain from its lower station in St. Elmo, genuinely steep and genuinely old, and the friend who is not drinking gets exactly the same ride as everyone else. Group rates start at twenty passengers on one payment, so buy ten round-trip tickets in one transaction and travel together. Check ridetheincline.com for hours and weather closures that week.

### Or here: Hunter Museum of American Art

*The indoor version: the Hunter Museum, on the bluff*

When the weather takes the mountain away, and here it can without much notice, the Hunter Museum of American Art is no consolation prize. It sits on the bluff above the river, a mansion with a modern addition, and the terrace view over the water earns the visit alone. Individual admission suits a group arriving in pieces; for a guided visit, call 423-267-0968 about group rates.

### Eat & rest

One view and one museum, enjoyed the same way sober or not, keep the weekend from blurring into one long evening.

*The Incline's lower station is about fifteen minutes from downtown by car; give the mountain a half day. The Hunter is a walk from downtown hotels. Ten people is three cars, not two.*

## Feeding everyone — Where to eat when everyone wants something different

### Go here: Bluff View Art District

Ten people who cannot agree on lunch never have to here. The Bluff View Art District is a family-owned historic neighbourhood on the bluff, five minutes end to end, with Rembrandt's Coffee House, Tony's Pasta Shop & Trattoria, the Bluff View Bakery and the River Gallery set among gardens and courtyards. Pasta for some, a pastry for others, and the vegetarian picks a room instead of picking around a dish. A Saturday-night table for ten at the trattoria is a real booking: call 423-321-0235.

### Or here: Main Street Meats

For one proper dinner, Main Street Meats is the Southside's best-known kitchen: a working butcher shop doing whole-animal butchery, with a restaurant attached and a Michelin Guide listing. For a table of ten, call 423-602-9568 well ahead, and on that call ask about large parties, a private room and vegetarian options.

### Eat & rest

Don't spend Friday night chasing a Saturday table for ten; the good kitchens are small and may not be able to seat you. Spread out across the Bluff View block or the Southside instead.

*Bluff View sits just below the Hunter Museum, a walk from downtown hotels; Main Street Meats is a short walk or ride away. Stay downtown and neither needs a car.*

## The river — An hour by the river — and the closure to check first

### Go here: Walnut Street Bridge

The best free hour in the city: one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, crossing the Tennessee River from downtown to the North Shore. No ticket, no booking, and stragglers can catch up at their own pace. A restoration that replaced corroded steel and nearly all of its wooden decking has kept it shut since March 2025; it reopens on Saturday 3 October 2026. Before that date, plan the river without it, and check chattanooga.gov if your dates sit close.

### Or here: Coolidge Park

Worth the trip on its own, and you can drive there either way. Coolidge Park spreads eleven waterfront acres with walking paths, paddle-craft access and a restored 1894 Dentzel carousel: fifty-two hand-carved animals, running daily, almost free to ride. The play fountain runs Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Parks line: 423-643-7866.

### Eat & rest

Put this against the group's worst hour, the mid-afternoon lull on day two, when everyone is tired and hungry in different directions. The park sits on the Tennessee Riverwalk, so the walkers walk and the rest stay by the water.

*Until the bridge opens, the North Shore is a short drive or a long walk round by another crossing. Once it does, Coolidge Park is a stroll from downtown.*

## Sunday morning — What to do with a Sunday morning

### Go here: Chattanooga Market

Most markets happen on Saturday; this one runs on Sunday, the morning you actually have. The Chattanooga Market fills the First Horizon Pavilion from 11am to 4pm through its season: free entry, hundreds of artisans, live music, food trucks and a new theme each week. Everyone eats from a different truck, the slow packer holds nobody up, and the roof means a shower does not cancel it. The schedule varies, special-event weekends included, so check chattanoogamarket.com for your Sunday.

### Or here: Rembrandt's Coffee House

*Out of season: coffee on the bluff, and a courtyard*

When the market is not running, walk the last morning back up to the bluff: coffee at Rembrandt's, something from the Bluff View Bakery, and a courtyard with the river below. No booking, everyone orders their own thing, and people drift in as they finish packing. It is a five-minute walk from a downtown hotel, which matters with luggage. Call 423-321-0235 to see what is open that day.

### Eat & rest

Give the last morning almost nothing to do; both stops are drop-in, so nobody has to be assembled at a set minute. Order cars earlier than feels necessary: ten people with luggage is three cars, and on a Sunday morning they do not all arrive at once.

*The pavilion is a few minutes from the Southside by car. The airport is close, but leave on the time you need to go, not the time the flight departs.*

## Book these first

Only a few things here can sell out from under a group of ten:

- Saturday-night lanes at Southside Social: 423-708-3280, and mention anyone under 21.
- Any sit-down dinner for ten: Tony's at Bluff View on 423-321-0235, or Main Street Meats on 423-602-9568, well ahead.
- Chattanooga Whiskey, if the group wants to tour together: 423-760-4333.
- Nothing else needs a group booking at your size. The Incline is ten individual tickets, the Hunter takes walk-ins, and the market and parks are free.

## One vegetarian, one who is not drinking

Every group of ten has both. Here the fix is where you go, not what you order:

- Lean on stops everyone does the same way, sober or not \(the lanes, the Incline, the carousel, the market\) and rooms where everyone orders their own thing, like the Bluff View block.
- The two to flag: Chattanooga Whiskey is 21-plus and all about tasting, and Main Street Meats is a butcher's restaurant, so ask about vegetarian options when you call.

## Where to stay, and the arithmetic behind it

For ten people, the expensive mistake here is the cars, not the room rate. Pick a base you can walk from:

- Downtown or the Southside. From either, Southside Social, the Experimental Distillery, Main Street Meats, the Hunter Museum and Bluff View are on foot.
- Five hotel rooms scatter a group; one large rental gives ten people a kitchen table to plan around. Check the listing's occupancy limit and local short-term-rental rules first.
- Out of walking range: the Incline station in St. Elmo, the riverfront distillery, the market pavilion and, until the bridge reopens, Coolidge Park. Order three cars and put one person in charge of each.

## Why Chattanooga instead of Nashville

The trade you are really weighing:

- You lose nightlife density: no strip of forty music rooms, and a few more phone calls to sort out group bookings.
- You gain a weekend cheap enough that everyone comes, with no pedal tavern and no bachelorette surcharge, built on a mountain railway, a river and a park instead of bars.
- If the bride wants a loud country-music weekend, that is Nashville, and the plan is linked below.

## What to skip, and before you go

- Skip building the weekend around one sit-down dinner for ten. The kitchens are small, and the Bluff View block and the Southside are better company anyway.
- Before anyone books a flight, sit down together and pick the two things to lock, say the Saturday lanes and the mountain. Leave the river, the bluff and Sunday morning loose for whoever is still standing.
