Everything sits within about 25 minutes, and with the valley towns around 1,000 feet and Mount Greylock's summit at 3,491, color takes roughly two weeks to walk down the mountain. Kennedy Park, right in Lenox village, has miles of easy, well-marked carriage-road trails through the woods, a walk rather than a hike, and it's close enough to town to duck into a café if the weather gets worse. ### Eat & rest Lenox village has the county's best run of sit-down restaurants, walkable from most in-town lodging. In fall a same-day table is usually possible, except on a peak Saturday. *Lenox is about 2.5–3 hours from Boston or New York via the Mass Pike; The Mount is 5 minutes from the village, with parking on site. The auto road to Mount Greylock's summit, the highest point in Massachusetts, winds through hardwood forest before opening onto the county's best foliage vantage, with five states in sight on a clear day. The top turns first, late September into early October, and the base follows through mid-October, so the summit can show you a different week of fall than Lenox that same morning. The road is open May 16 to October 30 most years, dawn to dusk, weather permitting. ### Backup: Norman Rockwell Museum If the summit road is closed, let Stockbridge fill the day. The Norman Rockwell Museum holds the largest collection of his original art, Saturday Evening Post covers among it, and opens daily through October, generally 10am–5pm. Afterward, walk Main Street, the scene of his 1967 painting. ### Eat & rest Stockbridge's Main Street has a walkable cluster of restaurants. For the classic dinner, it's the Red Lion Inn, an 18th-century inn still running as a hotel and restaurant. *The summit road is about 20 minutes from Lenox; Stockbridge is 10 minutes south on Route 7. Chesterwood was the summer home and studio of Daniel Chester French, who made the seated Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial, and its woodland trails and walk-in studio make a hushed, less-visited counterpart to The Mount. It's a few minutes from Stockbridge village and keeps seasonal fall hours through October. Or skip the ticket and give the last morning to Stockbridge's Main Street; after two full days, an unstructured one is its own luxury. ### Backup: Naumkeag Naumkeag, the Choate family's Stockbridge summer 'cottage' with its Chinese-inspired Blue Steps gardens, turns festive in October for the Incredible Naumkeag Pumpkin Show, on timed tickets that run into the evening.
