Seven hills, slick limestone lanes and the light coming off the Tagus: Lisbon is a city for going slowly, together. This plan trades a packed checklist for one anchor a day, a backup if plans or weather shift, and long stretches for wine, custard tarts and a miradouro each evening. Two days stay on foot and rail in the historic core of Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré; the third runs out along the waterfront to Belém, an easy tram or rideshare away. Good to know: the hills are real and the cobbles steep, so wear shoes with grip and lean on the trams and funiculars when your legs are done.

## Day 1 — Alfama, the castle, and fado after dark

### Anchor: Castelo de São Jorge

From the castle's central courtyard the city opens out below you: Alfama's terracotta rooftops, the Baixa grid and the wide Tagus estuary beyond. Come in the late afternoon, when it is cooler and quieter than midday, walk the battlements and find a calm corner of your own. Give it a slow 90 minutes rather than a rushed lap.

### Backup: Alfama

Skip the ticket and the last climb and get lost in Alfama itself, the oldest quarter: washing-strung lanes, tiny squares and sudden river views. It's a low-effort, high-charm afternoon, and you'll stumble onto half the miradouros on your own.

### Eat & rest

Lunch at O Velho Eurico, a tiny modern tasca between the Sé and the castle. For sunset, walk up from the Tram 28 stop at Graça to the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the highest great viewpoint, facing west. Then fado: Mesa de Frades in a tile-lined former chapel, or the packed little room at A Tasca do Chico.

*The climb up through Alfama from Baixa is steep, about 20–25 minutes on foot. Tram 28 or a short ride saves your legs for the evening.*

Day reference: 1

## Day 2 — Chiado wine, Bica, and a rooftop sunset

### Anchor: Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Smaller and more intimate than the big-name miradouros, Santa Catarina looks out over the Bica district to the Tagus, the 25 de Abril bridge and the rooftops below. Pair it with the Bica funicular, the steep little tram that creaks up and down one of Lisbon's most-photographed streets. Take a coffee or a beer from the kiosk and sit a while; street musicians, when they're playing, are a bonus.

### Backup: Chiado

Legs not cooperating? Keep the day in Chiado, Lisbon's elegant shopping-and-café quarter, with a long coffee at a historic café and a slow browse. No climbing required.

### Eat & rest

Open with wine at By the Wine, José Maria da Fonseca's vaulted Chiado tasting room under a ceiling of green bottles. Watch sunset over the castle from Park, the rooftop bar atop a Bairro Alto parking garage. Dine at A Taberna da Rua das Flores or A Cevicheria, then end in Pensão Amor's velvet nooks on Pink Street.

*Mostly downhill from Chiado on the way in, steep on the way back; that's what the funicular is for. Keep the morning loose so you can linger.*

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — Belém, the river, and pastéis

### Anchor: Jerónimos Monastery

Belém is Lisbon's grand riverside chapter, history with a sea breeze. Take the cloister of the Jerónimos Monastery slowly: this soaring Manueline masterpiece was begun in 1501 to mark Vasco da Gama's return from India. Then stroll the waterfront to the Belém Tower, the fortified river gate and the city's most photographed monument. It uses timed entry, so book ahead.

### Backup: Padrão dos Descobrimentos

*the Belém waterfront*

Skip the interiors and walk the riverside promenade past the Padrão dos Descobrimentos \(Monument to the Discoveries\) to the tower. The exterior views and the breeze are the best part, and it's all flat and free.

### Eat & rest

Five minutes from the monastery, Pastéis de Belém has baked the original custard-tart recipe since 1837; eat them warm with cinnamon. At golden hour, walk up onto the sloping roof of MAAT for a wide view over the Tagus and the bridge. Close the trip at the Time Out Market in Cais do Sodré: different cravings, one shared table.

*Belém is a 15–20 minute Tram 15E ride or a short rideshare along the river from the center. Book the monastery ahead too if you can.*

Day reference: 3

## Rainy day or heat-of-the-afternoon backup \(indoors\)

Summer afternoons run bright and hot, and a winter weekend can turn wet. Keep these indoor hours in your back pocket:

- LX Factory \(Alcântara\): design shops, cafés and galleries under cover in a converted industrial complex, anchored by Ler Devagar, a soaring multi-story bookshop regularly named one of the most beautiful in the world.
- Time Out Market and MAAT, both on Day 3, work as dry, lively refuges when the weather turns.
- The Museu Calouste Gulbenkian main galleries and the Museu Nacional do Azulejo \(National Tile Museum\) periodically close sections for renovation, so check before building a wet afternoon around either.

## Where to eat

The rooms that matter most here are tiny or take no reservations, so plan to arrive early:

- O Velho Eurico: cash-only, no reservations; go early in the lunch service.
- A Taberna da Rua das Flores: chalkboard menu, no reservations; arrive before the doors open.
- A Cevicheria \(Príncipe Real\): walk-ins only; go at opening.
- Park rooftop: no reservations, and it fills fast around golden hour.
- Fado: book Mesa de Frades ahead; at A Tasca do Chico, reserve or arrive at opening.
- Choose the one fado night you'd both hate to miss and book it before you fly. Let the tascas, the tarts and the sunsets happen on the day.
