Walk the Thames from the London Eye to Tower Bridge as the light changes, lose a morning to the Rosetta Stone, and end the weekend by a pub fire: London for two works best one neighborhood at a time. Day one follows the river, day two pairs a great museum with the parks, and day three is Notting Hill's market and a proper pub evening. Each has a quieter backup for queues, crowds or the weather \(this is still London\). The big museums are free, which takes the pressure off: if a line is long or the mood shifts, something just as good is usually nearby.

## Day 1 — The South Bank and Tower Bridge

### Anchor: South Bank, London

*Anchor — the South Bank on foot, to Tower Bridge*

The whole skyline unfolds across the water on this mostly traffic-free riverside walk from the London Eye past Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Buskers play, secondhand book stalls shelter under Waterloo Bridge, and benches face the river whenever you want to sit. It's flat and paved all the way; allow two to three hours with stops. Finish by crossing Tower Bridge as the light changes, the Tower of London's stone walls close by on the north bank and the City's skyline rising behind.

### Backup: Tate Modern

If the weather turns mid-walk, duck into Tate Modern, Britain's national gallery of modern and contemporary art, in a converted power station right on your route. The permanent collection is free, and the vast Turbine Hall alone earns the detour; an hour is plenty.

### Eat & rest

Graze through Borough Market near London Bridge for lunch, a historic covered market built for sharing small plates. It winds down well before dinner, so eat your evening meal elsewhere.

## Day 2 — The British Museum and an afternoon in the parks

### Anchor: British Museum

The British Museum is free and far too big to see in full, so choose a handful of rooms together. The Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian sculpture galleries are the ones almost nobody skips, and the Great Court's curved glass roof is worth a pause between wings. Arrive near opening for a calmer first hour. In the afternoon, a short Tube ride takes you to Hyde Park: follow the Serpentine into Kensington Gardens, rent a rowing boat for a slightly silly hour, or just lie on the lawns.

### Backup: National Gallery

If the British Museum's crowds are too much, the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square is calmer and just as free: centuries of European painting, Van Gogh to Vermeer, in rooms rarely as packed as the British Museum's headline galleries.

### Eat & rest

Dinner in Kensington or Notting Hill, just past the parks, where quiet gastropubs and small kitchens suit a slow evening after a day on your feet.

## Day 3 — Notting Hill and a proper pub evening

### Anchor: Portobello Road Market

*Anchor — Portobello Road, then a wander through Notting Hill*

Portobello Road Market runs through Notting Hill in rows of vintage jewelry, old books and bric-a-brac, with the pastel-colored houses as a backdrop. Treat it as a wander, not a shopping list: browse, haggle a little, and let the quieter side streets pull you off the main strip. Saturday is when the antiques stalls are in full swing; other days are calmer but still worthwhile. Afterward, loop through the pastel terraces around Lansdowne Road and Chepstow Villas.

### Backup: Kensington Palace

If the market feels too crowded, walk through Kensington Gardens to Kensington Palace, a working royal residence with state rooms open to visitors. The formal sunken gardens outside are lovely even if you don't go in; check timed tickets in advance.

### Eat & rest

Close the trip with a proper pub evening, by a fireplace or in a beer garden depending on the season. Notting Hill and the surrounding streets have several worth walking straight into.

## Rainy-day indoor backups \(and it will probably rain\)

London's museums are free, indoors and genuinely excellent. Lean on them:

- The British Museum, National Gallery and Tate Modern from the plan all work as a rainy-day swap on any day.
- Natural History Museum: free, a Victorian cathedral of a building in South Kensington with a blue whale skeleton overhead.

## Where to eat and drink

- Borough Market for a grazing lunch; Kensington and Notting Hill for gastropubs and small kitchens at dinner.
- Save one evening for a proper pub. Before you go, agree on the one anchor each of you would hate to miss, and let the weather decide the rest.
