> Madrid at its own late pace, for two: the Prado and Retiro's rowboats, market plates into Malasaña's bars, and a rooftop sunset over the Gran Vía.

Madrid keeps late hours, and a weekend for two works best when you stop fighting them: slow mornings, one big thing a day, and evenings that run long past what feels reasonable back home. Day one pairs the Prado with a rowboat on Retiro's lake. Day two trades galleries for market plates and Malasaña's bars, and day three ends on a rooftop as the sky over the Gran Vía changes color. Each day carries a calmer backup for when the heat, the crowds or your own energy say slow down. You won't need a car: the historic center crosses easily on foot, and the metro covers the rest in minutes.

## Day 1 — The Prado, then Retiro at golden hour

### Anchor: Museo del Prado

*Anchor — the Prado, at a two-person pace*

Two focused hours in the Prado beat four tired ones. Pick a handful of rooms and save your attention for the two works almost nobody skips, Velázquez's Las Meninas and Goya's Black Paintings; both reward standing still. Arrive close to opening to stay ahead of the tour groups. Then walk five minutes into the Parque del Retiro and let the morning settle. Find the Palacio de Cristal, a glass-and-iron pavilion in the trees, and take a rowboat out on the Estanque Grande for an easy, slightly silly hour on the water.

### Backup: Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid

*Easy backup — the Royal Botanical Garden*

When one more gallery sounds like too much, step next door into the Real Jardín Botánico: formal terraces and greenhouses with a fraction of the Prado's crowd. Forty-five minutes to an hour is plenty, and you can walk on into Retiro without backtracking. Entry is separate from the museum.

### Eat & rest

For dinner, drift into the Barrio de las Letras and Huertas, the old literary quarter, where small tabernas are made for grazing rather than a formal sit-down. Just right for a first night.

## Day 2 — Market grazing and Malasaña after dark

### Anchor: Mercado de San Miguel

Eat your way around the Mercado de San Miguel, the wrought-iron market hall beside the Plaza Mayor: jamón, seafood, olives and small glasses of wine and vermouth, shared at a high table. Order a little of everything and notice what you both keep going back for. Go before the midday rush; by early evening it is loud and packed. Later, walk about 20 minutes north \(or ride a couple of metro stops\) into Malasaña, where narrow streets of vintage shopfronts fill with bar tables once the sun drops. Let two or three bars make the evening.

### Backup: Plaza Mayor

Market too loud? Two minutes away, the 17th-century Plaza Mayor has been the city's civic stage for centuries. Take a coffee or a small glass under the arcades and watch Madrid go by; you stay dry if the weather turns, and there is nothing to book.

### Eat & rest

Keep dinner loose in Malasaña. Small kitchens and vermuterías sit so close together that walking until one looks right beats any booking.

## Day 3 — Royal grandeur and a rooftop sunset

### Anchor: Palacio Real de Madrid

*Anchor — the Royal Palace, then sunset from a rooftop*

Give the late morning to the Palacio Real, the official royal residence, all gilt and chandeliers from the centuries when Madrid ran an empire. Skip the urge to see every room: the Throne Room and the Royal Armoury justify the visit on their own. Book timed tickets ahead, especially on weekends, and budget about ninety minutes. Then walk twenty minutes across the center to the rooftop terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, with the Gran Vía and the skyline spread below. Expect a small entry fee, and arrive with time to settle in before the light starts to go.

### Backup: Catedral de la Almudena

*Easy backup — the Almudena Cathedral*

If the palace queue is long, cross the plaza to the Catedral de la Almudena instead. It is young by Madrid standards, with a bright, colorful interior and views from its dome, and it costs you almost no extra walking. The dome climb is optional and quick.

### Eat & rest

For the last dinner, take a taxi or the metro to La Latina, where the streets around Cava Baja are lined with tabernas built for one more long, grazing evening.

## Rainy-day and heat-of-the-day indoor backups

Indoor anchors that hold up in any weather:

- Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza — the third leg of the Golden Triangle of art, a private collection spanning centuries; smaller and calmer than the Prado.
- Museo Reina Sofía — Spain's modern art museum and home to Picasso's Guernica, a bracing counterpoint to a morning of Old Masters.
- The Botánico's greenhouses and the iron-and-glass San Miguel market hall keep off rain and sun alike.

## Where to eat and drink

One neighborhood per night:

- Barrio de las Letras and Huertas — casual tabernas for an easy first night.
- Malasaña — vintage bars and vermuterías; no destination, just wander.
- La Latina, around Cava Baja — the densest taberna-hopping street in the city, made for sharing small plates across two or three stops.
- Before you fly, book the palace tickets together, then leave every dinner and every bar to wherever the night takes you.
