![A 3-Day Mexico City Weekend with Friends](https://wonderkit.app/og-heroes/mexico-city-mexico/3-day-weekend-with-friends.c3fd9a32.jpg)

A row of seats at the lucha libre. A painted boat on the Xochimilco canals. A cantina table where the beers keep arriving, and a taco stand at two in the morning. The best of Mexico City gets better with more people in it, almost none of it needs a reservation for eight, and hardly any of it needs you all to want the same thing. Each night roots itself in a single neighbourhood, so nobody crosses the city at 1am to find the others. Roma Norte, Condesa, Juárez and the Centro Histórico sit close enough that a short ride-hail links any two. Good to know: Roma and Condesa have been at the centre of a documented fight over gentrification and short-term rentals, with protests in 2025. Being a good guest is cheap: try the Spanish, tip properly, spend money where you sleep, and keep a residential street quiet at 3am.

## Day 1 — The Centro by day, lucha libre by night, tacos after

### Anchor: Arena México

Masks, pyrotechnics and a crowd shouting its own commentary: this is the best night a group of friends can have in the city. Arena México in Colonia Doctores is home to CMLL, the world's oldest wrestling promotion, and a local institution full of families and regulars rather than a show for visitors. Cards run Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, with Friday the marquee night, and tickets are cheap. Check the card and start time on CMLL's site, sit close enough to see faces, and buy a mask outside.

### Backup: Plaza Garibaldi

Wrong night for lucha? Do the other loud thing. At Plaza Garibaldi, mariachi bands wait to be hired by the song, and on its edge Salón Tenampa, a cantina open since 1925 and muralled floor to ceiling, is about as unsubtly joyful as a room gets. You are paying for the noise, and it is worth it.

### Eat & rest

Give the afternoon to the Centro: the Zócalo, the murals and stained glass of Bellas Artes, streets you can split up in and still find each other. Warm up at Salón Corona, a cheap, fast beer hall unbothered by eight walking in. After the matches, eat tacos standing up at Los Cocuyos, open around the clock.

*Arena México is minutes by ride-hail from the Centro or Roma. Take Uber or DiDi late at night, and walk a block or two before requesting the car.*

## Day 2 — A trajinera in Xochimilco, then Roma Norte after dark

### Anchor: Xochimilco

You hire the whole boat, not a seat: a flat-bottomed trajinera in loud colours, poled along the last canals of the Aztec lake system, a UNESCO World Heritage site and, on a Saturday afternoon, a floating party. Boats pull alongside selling food, beer and micheladas; mariachis climb aboard and play by the song. Start from an official embarcadero such as Nuevo Nativitas and agree the posted per-boat, per-hour rate and the trip length before boarding. People do fall in: life jackets on, seated while moving.

### Backup: Coyoacán

The calmer version of the same day: a cobbled southern neighbourhood around the Jardín Centenario, tostadas and churros at the Mercado de Coyoacán, and a plaza to sit in for almost nothing. If the group wants a sight, the Frida Kahlo Museum \(Casa Azul\) is nearby; book ahead, it sells out.

### Eat & rest

Eat on the boat; the food that pulls alongside is the point. Get back by early evening and rest, because the night starts late. Then crawl Roma Norte: Licorería Limantour, where the city's modern cocktail scene effectively began, Rayo a few streets away, and little Baltra Bar to finish once the group thins.

*Xochimilco is in the far south, 45–75 minutes each way by ride-hail. Go late morning or early afternoon so you are not returning in the dark.*

## Day 3 — Chapultepec, a pulquería, and one last rooftop

### Anchor: Bosque de Chapultepec

*A slow morning in Chapultepec*

A gentle day for a group not at its best. Chapultepec is an urban forest bigger than Central Park, with the Castillo on the hill, a lake, a free zoo \(closed Mondays\) and space to split up and regroup. If you manage one indoor thing, make it the Museo Nacional de Antropología at its edge, one of the world's great museums: an hour there beats three hours of trying. Parts of the park are fenced off mid-restoration; check the Castillo's hours on the day.

### Backup: Teotihuacán

If the group has one big day left rather than a slow one, go to Teotihuacán, the vast pre-Aztec pyramid complex about an hour north. It takes most of the day door to door, so leave early to beat the heat and crowds, and check which structures can currently be climbed before anyone sets their heart on the Pyramid of the Sun.

### Eat & rest

Order one pulque between two at Las Duelistas in the Centro, pouring for well over a century under psychedelic murals; it closes Sundays, when Los Insurgentes in Roma steps in. Then Terraza Catedral's rooftop, facing the cathedral. End at El Vilsito in Narvarte, a mechanic's workshop by day serving al pastor until three, four, five in the morning.

*Chapultepec is a short ride from Roma and Condesa. The Centro and Roma rooftops are about twenty minutes apart, so pick one side.*

## Group logistics

What makes a bigger group work here:

- Use Uber, DiDi or Cabify rather than street taxis, especially at night. The group can split across two cars and meet at the same pin.
- The city sits at about 2,240 metres: drinks land harder and dehydration comes faster. Buy electrolyte sachets \("electrolitos"\) at any Oxxo or 7-Eleven on day one.
- Nothing starts early. Dinner is around nine or ten and bars fill after midnight, so a group arriving at eight drinks alone.
- Cantinas, markets and taco stands take eight without a booking; the cocktail bars mostly do not.
- The areas in this plan are comfortable to walk. After midnight on quiet side streets, take the car the last few blocks.

## Where to drink as a group

- Mezcal, Centro: Bósforo on Luis Moya, small and serious; La Botica has several branches if it is full.
- La Ópera Bar, Centro: open since 1876, with Pancho Villa's bullet hole in the ceiling. Go for the room; service can be hit and miss.
- Handshake Speakeasy, Juárez: a North America’s 50 Best number one, tiny, with tight reservations. Groups of six or more must email ahead.
- Roma-side rooftops with wider views: 191 Rooftop on Hotel Roma 191, and Supra Rooftop.

## Where to eat as a group

- Mercado de San Juan near Bellas Artes is where chefs shop, full of things you will not see at home.
- Mercado Roma, the gourmet food hall, is easy for a mixed group; treat it as convenient rather than a destination.
- The rule here: the group meal that works is a stand or a market, not a restaurant.
- Settle two things together before you fly: which night is lucha, and whether Saturday is the Handshake queue or the Roma crawl, because you cannot really do both. Leave the rest to the night.
