![Naples in 3 days: a weekend for two](https://wonderkit.app/og-heroes/naples-italy/3-day-weekend-for-couples.8b77ca18.jpg)

Laundry strung between balconies, a margherita in the city that invented it, Vesuvius across the bay as the sun goes down. Naples is louder, older and more layered than most Italian city breaks, and that is its appeal for a couple who would rather wander a working city than tick off a polished one. The plan pairs the tangled lanes of the historic center with the quieter seafront, gives you one anchor a day and an easy backup when heat or crowds argue for calm, and leaves room for pizza eaten without ceremony. The historic core is compact enough to cover on foot.

## Day 1 — The Spanish Quarter and a first pizza

### Anchor: Quartieri Spagnoli

*Anchor — the Spanish Quarter, on foot*

Small shrines tucked into corners, street life spilling out of doorways: the Quartieri Spagnoli, the dense grid climbing the hill behind Via Toledo, isn't dressed up for visitors, and that's the point. Go slowly, let a lane pull you uphill, forget the map. It's steep in parts and cobbled throughout, so wear comfortable shoes; it's safe to wander by day, with the awareness you'd bring to any dense urban quarter. Regroup on Via Toledo, the wide shopping street at the bottom, before deciding on lunch.

### Backup: Certosa e Museo di San Martino

*Easy backup — the Certosa di San Martino*

Above the neighborhood on its own hill, the Certosa di San Martino is a former monastery turned museum — cloisters, baroque decoration and one of the city's best panoramic views of the bay. It's a calmer, more contained couple of hours than the streets below, and the funicular from the lower town spares you the steepest climb.

### Eat & rest

Make tonight the non-negotiable pizza dinner: a proper margherita or marinara from a pizzeria that's been at it for generations. The historic center has several storied ones, so walk to one rather than settling for the closest to the hotel.

## Day 2 — Underground Naples and Via San Gregorio Armeno

### Anchor: Napoli Sotterranea

*Anchor — underground Naples, then the old decumani*

More than two thousand years of Naples, stacked beneath the streets you walked yesterday. Napoli Sotterranea's guided descent passes Greek and Roman aqueducts, cisterns and World War II air-raid shelters. Tours run on a schedule through narrow passages and stairs, so book ahead and wear shoes you don't mind getting dusty. Back in daylight, walk the decumani — the old Greek and Roman east-west streets — to Via San Gregorio Armeno, where artisan workshops make nativity figurines and other handcrafted pieces year-round.

### Backup: Duomo di Napoli

*Easy backup — the Naples Cathedral*

No tour slot? A short walk along the decumani, the Duomo di Napoli holds the chapel of San Gennaro, the city's patron saint, the Succorpo crypt, and the older basilica of Santa Restituta, whose excavated floor exposes a Roman-era zone beneath the church. Same layered history, no booked time. The catacombs of San Gennaro at Capodimonte are a separate excursion.

### Eat & rest

Stay in the historic center for dinner: the streets around the decumani are dense with small trattorias doing ragù and fried Neapolitan classics. Walk until one looks right.

## Day 3 — The Lungomare and a view of the bay

### Anchor: Lungomare di Napoli

*Anchor — the Lungomare, then Castel dell'Ovo at sunset*

Vesuvius across the water on a clear day, and nowhere in particular to be. The Lungomare curves along the Bay of Naples, pedestrianized, flat and wide — walk it hand in hand in the late afternoon as the heat eases, a slow change after two days in the dense center. End at Castel dell'Ovo, one of the city's oldest fortifications, on a rocky islet joined by a short causeway, and watch the sun go down with Vesuvius in silhouette. The interior is often free to enter.

### Backup: Villa Comunale

If the seafront sun is too much, the Villa Comunale runs right alongside it — a shaded public garden of benches and palm trees with the same bay views filtered through green. Duck in and out of the shade and you still end at Castel dell'Ovo for sunset.

### Eat & rest

For a last dinner, the streets just inland around Chiaia are quieter and more polished than the historic center — a calm final note before an early flight.

## Rainy-day indoor backups

Napoli Sotterranea \(Day 2\) is underground by definition. Three more that hold up in any weather:

- Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli — one of the great archaeological collections, including treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
- Certosa e Museo di San Martino — cloisters and galleries above the Spanish Quarter, with covered viewing terraces.
- Castel dell'Ovo — much of the interior walkway is covered stone passage, sheltered from rain.

## Where to eat and drink

Pizza, the decumani trattorias and Chiaia are covered day by day. One more:

- Lungomare cafés — an aperitivo with a bay view before or after the sunset walk.
- Settle two things together before you go: which night is pizza night, and whether the underground tour gets a booked slot. The rest of Naples is better left to wander.
