Base yourselves in North Conway and you get that drive, the gorges of Franconia Notch about an hour away, and a valley train on your doorstep, with the region's deepest run of rooms and restaurants to come home to each night. Good to know: Cannon Mountain's Aerial Tramway retired its second-generation tram after the 2025 season and is not running in fall 2026 while a rebuild is planned, so it isn't in this plan. ## How to use this plan Rooms for the first two weekends of October book up well ahead, so reserve early or go midweek. An early snow can shift road and site status; check nh.gov/dncr and each attraction's site for your dates. ## Day 1 — North Conway and the valley ### Anchor: Conway Scenic Railroad *Settle in, then a valley train ride* Let someone else drive on day one. The Conway Scenic Railroad leaves from the restored 1874 station in the middle of the village, and the shorter Valley Train loops through the Mount Washington Valley in a couple of hours, color sliding past the windows while the travel day falls away. It runs a summer-and-fall schedule through mid-October, with operating days that vary by month; conwayscenic.com has the timetable. ### Backup: Diana’s Baths *Diana's Baths instead* Rather walk than ride? A flat, well-marked trail, well under a mile each way, leads to Diana's Baths: granite ledges and cascading pools just outside the village, with fall color overhead. It's one of the easiest real waterfalls in the White Mountains to reach. ### Eat & rest The village has the region's widest choice of restaurants, casual to sit-down, walkable from most lodging. You'll rarely need a reservation, except on the first two weekends of October. *North Conway is about 2.5–3 hours from Boston via NH-16. Fill the tank here; the Kancamagus has no gas stations. Half a day.* Day reference: 1 ## Day 2 — The Kancamagus Highway ### Anchor: Kancamagus Highway *Drive the Kancamagus* The road is the destination, so drive it like one. The Kancamagus climbs through White Mountain National Forest to Kancamagus Pass, and every stop is short: Lower Falls and Sabbaday Falls are brief walks from the road, the Sugar Hill and C.L. Graham Wangan Ground overlooks look back down the valley, and Rocky Gorge is an easy stroll to granite on the Swift River. At 20–30 minutes each, a 45-minute drive becomes most of a day. There's no cell service and no streetlights for long stretches, so drive it in daylight. ### Backup: Loon Mountain Gondola Skyride *Loon Mountain instead* When fog settles on the pass, as it often does at 2,855 feet even on a clear valley day, take the high view from a gondola. Loon Mountain in Lincoln, at the western end of the Kancamagus, runs fall foliage rides on a seasonal schedule; check loonmtn.com for operating days. ### Eat & rest There's nothing to eat along the highway, so pack a picnic for a pullout like Rocky Gorge or Sabbaday Falls, or lunch in Lincoln at the western end. Dinner back in North Conway. *Drive Conway to Lincoln and back, or carry on to Franconia Notch and loop home via I-93. A full day with stops.* Day reference: 2 ## Day 3 — Franconia Notch and Flume Gorge ### Anchor: Flume Gorge *Franconia Notch and the Flume* End between granite walls. The Flume Gorge is an 800-foot chasm in Franconia Notch State Park, with a boardwalk winding through it past a waterfall: the park's best short hike without technical gear. In 2026 the trail runs 9am–5pm through mid-October and 9am–4pm for the last two weeks, last entry about an hour before close; reserve on nhstateparks.org, since walk-up entry isn't guaranteed on peak weekends. Afterward, pull in at Profile Lake, below where the Old Man of the Mountain stood, and at the Basin, a glacial pothole by the road. ### Backup: Cathedral Ledge If the Notch is lost in cloud, stay near base. A paved road runs most of the way up Cathedral Ledge, a few minutes from the village, to a granite cliff-top view over the whole Mount Washington Valley, no real hike required. It's a half-hour stop; pair it with a slow village morning. ### Eat & rest Lincoln, a few minutes from the Notch, has casual lunches handy for both. A last dinner in North Conway closes the loop and keeps the next morning's drive home short. *The Notch is 1–1¼ hours away via the Kancamagus, or about an hour via US-302. The Flume lot fills early on foliage weekends: arrive before 10am.* Day reference: 3 ## Rainy or fogged-in backups Mountain weather here turns fast.
