Frost on the cobbles, spires against a pewter sky, and Charles Bridge going dark over the Vltava while the castle lights up above it: this is Prague in Advent. The Old Town is compact and walkable, and its Christmas market has become one of the most photographed in Europe. Expect temperatures around or below freezing and crowds that build on weekend evenings. Pack boots that grip on ice, and leave the evenings unplanned: some of the best moments here are just standing on a bridge in the cold, looking at the lights.

## Day 1 — Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock

### Anchor: Old Town Square Christmas Market

The spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn rise straight behind the great tree, and the pastel Gothic and Baroque façades would stop you even without the stalls of mulled wine, roasted sausages and hand-blown ornaments. On the hour, join the crowd under the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall tower, first installed in the 15th century and one of the oldest still working, for its short mechanical show. Get there a few minutes early for a clear view.

### Backup: Municipal House

If the cold wins, walk a few minutes to the Municipal House on Republic Square. Its Art Nouveau café, all gilt and stained glass, has been a gathering place for over a century, and coffee and cake there is the elegant way to wait out the weather.

### Eat & rest

Roast duck or goulash with bread dumplings and a Czech beer in the lanes around the square. Walk back through the market late, when the lights are still on and the crowds have thinned.

*Everything today sits within a 10-minute walk. After the clock, follow Karlova toward the river with something warm in hand.*

## Day 2 — Charles Bridge and Prague Castle

### Anchor: Prague Castle

Climb to Prague Castle, seat of Czech rulers for over a thousand years, and spend the late morning inside St. Vitus Cathedral, its rose windows and flying buttresses centuries in the making. The courtyards look out over a sea of red roofs. Then wander down through the Lesser Town and reach Charles Bridge at dusk: the lamps come on, the daytime crowds thin, and the castle glows on the hill behind you. The 14th-century bridge, lined with Baroque statues, costs nothing and gives you the city's most romantic five minutes.

### Backup: St. Nicholas Church, Lesser Town

*St. Nicholas Church instead*

When the wind off the river is too much, duck into St. Nicholas Church in the Lesser Town. The enormous frescoed dome and gilded Baroque interior are a jolt of warmth after grey streets, and a short visit still leaves time for the bridge once the weather eases.

### Eat & rest

Stay on the Lesser Town side for dinner. The small wine bars and restaurants below the castle are quieter than the Old Town; linger a couple of hours before the walk back across the bridge.

*The castle sits high above the river, so budget time for the climb or take the tram partway. Whatever else changes, cross Charles Bridge once after dark.*

## Day 3 — Wenceslas Square and a last mulled wine

### Anchor: Wenceslas Square Christmas Market

*The Wenceslas Square market, then a slow walk back*

Prague's second big Advent market fills the long, wide Wenceslas Square, a little calmer than Old Town Square and right for a slower last mulled wine. The square saw major demonstrations in the 20th century, so the stalls stand on real history. By now you know which stall had what you wanted: this is the morning for souvenirs. Then drift back through the Old Town by whichever lanes catch your eye.

### Backup: National Museum, Prague

*the National Museum instead*

On a bitter last morning, the extensively restored National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square offers grand halls and a striking central staircase, an unhurried indoor hour before onward travel.

### Eat & rest

One more round of dumplings and beer in a traditional Czech pub before you go. There is rarely a bad one within a few minutes' walk of the center.

*Wenceslas Square is a short walk south of Old Town Square, so the last day stays compact.*

## What to eat and drink at the markets

Start with a mug of svařák and work outward from there:

- Svařák: Czech mulled wine, served hot in a mug you can usually keep or return for a deposit.
- Trdelník: a rolled, grilled pastry dusted with sugar and cinnamon, often filled with ice cream or Nutella.
- Klobása: grilled sausage with mustard and bread, a proper hand-warmer of a lunch.
- Medovina: Czech mead, sweeter than svařák and worth one round.

## Staying warm

- Frost and ice make the cobblestones slick; good soles matter more here than in most winter cities.
- The metro and trams make the hop between the Old Town and the castle district easy when the walk feels long in the cold.
- Build in at least one long sit at a grand café like the Municipal House. Before you go, agree on your one fixed point, Charles Bridge after dark, and let everything else bend around the weather.
