Give Providence three unhurried days and it opens up one neighborhood at a time: art and old books on College Hill, greenhouses in Roger Williams Park, then the rivers that run through downtown. Each day has one main stop and a nearby alternative, so you can follow the weather and your energy rather than a timetable. WaterFire is a lovely bonus if a lighting falls on your dates, but the river walk stands on its own. Good to know: exhibitions, access and event schedules change, so confirm visiting details before you set out, especially the RISD Museum’s if your first day is a Monday.

## How to use this plan

Pick the anchor or the backup for each day; you won’t need both. The backups are there for rain, tired legs or a quieter mood.

## Day 1 — Art and books on College Hill

### Anchor: RISD Museum

Start among the RISD Museum’s galleries and choose a few rooms that interest you both instead of trying to cover the whole collection. It makes an easy first stop on College Hill and hands you a conversation to carry through the rest of the day.

### Backup: Providence Athenaeum

For a quieter start, step into the historic lending library on Benefit Street. Nonmembers are welcome to explore its rooms on a self-guided tour; check in at the visitor desk when you arrive. Browse the shelves, slow down together, then carry on through College Hill instead of hurrying to another ticketed stop.

### Eat & rest

Leave lunch open and pick a café around College Hill or downtown afterward. Give the afternoon to a relaxed walk, not a second museum.

*The museum and the Athenaeum are both on College Hill, and the neighborhood is hilly, so walk it at your own pace.*

## Day 2 — A slower day in Roger Williams Park

### Anchor: Roger Williams Park Botanical Center

*Wander the Botanical Center*

Make the Botanical Center your one planned stop. Its greenhouses keep a garden visit going through the colder months, and the outdoor plantings add more to explore in warmer weather. Linger where you like rather than racing through every room, then leave time for the wider park.

### Backup: Museum of Natural History and Planetarium

*Switch to the Natural History Museum*

Want to be indoors? The Museum of Natural History and Planetarium is in Roger Williams Park too. Take in the exhibits together, then decide whether a planetarium show fits your day; shows run on their own schedule, with separate tickets. It keeps the park day intact when the weather turns.

### Eat & rest

Plan a proper break after your stop. Bring a snack or find lunch outside the park, and come back only if you still feel like walking.

*Roger Williams Park sits away from College Hill and downtown, so plan a ride rather than assuming the whole weekend is walkable.*

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — Follow the downtown rivers

### Anchor: Waterplace Park

Finish beside the water at Waterplace Park and the connected Riverwalk, public spaces the city created as part of its downtown riverfront. No ticket or event required: pause at the basin, walk whichever stretch suits your energy, and leave room for a last meal before you head home.

### Backup: Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge

*Cross the pedestrian bridge instead*

For a shorter outing, cross the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge and spend your remaining time along the river. The pedestrian crossing is a destination in its own right, and a fitting place to end a weekend shaped by Providence’s neighborhoods and waterways. Turn back whenever you’re ready.

### Eat & rest

If a WaterFire lighting falls on your dates, make it an optional evening return. Lightings are scheduled events, not a nightly feature of the park.

*Keep the last day flexible around your departure; the city is planning access and resilience improvements along the Riverwalk, so the route can change.*

## A date-night extra, only when scheduled

- WaterFire Providence lights the downtown rivers on selected dates, listed in the organizer’s season schedule. Match it against your exact weekend; the park and Riverwalk are worth the walk without a lighting.
- Between you, settle which three stops you’ll actually commit to, and hold one evening open in case the rivers are lit.
