![5-Day San Diego Itinerary with Kids \(Ages \~6 and 9\)](https://wonderkit.app/og-heroes/san-diego-ca/5-day-with-kids.81fb085a.jpg)

In San Diego the big adventure fits into a morning, the afternoon belongs to lawns, sand and naps, and nobody has to melt down by 3 p.m. Each day has a single anchor, an easy backup if the morning runs long, and a real rest window. It's written for short legs, strollers, and the fact that a 6- and a 9-year-old run on very different batteries, so pick what fits the day you're actually having, not the one you planned.

## How to use this plan

Mornings are for the big thing, when kids are freshest and lines are shortest; afternoons stay loose. Nothing here assumes you'll do all of it.

## Day 1 — San Diego Zoo + Balboa Park

### Anchor: San Diego Zoo

Giraffes, the panda habitat and the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, an area designed specifically for children, make the zoo inside Balboa Park pure wonder at this age. Ride the Skyfari aerial tram early: the 9-year-old gets a map's-eye view and the 6-year-old skips a steep hill. The zoo is hilly, so plan half a day rather than a full one, and use the Skyfari and the guided bus to dodge the worst climbs.

### Backup: Balboa Park Carousel

*Easy backup \(if the zoo feels like too much\):*

The lowest-effort, highest-joy corner of Balboa Park. The 1910 carousel and the open-air miniature railroad sit right by the zoo entrance, and the 3-acre Pepper Grove playground has separate zones for big and little kids.

### Eat & rest

Pack a mid-morning snack; the zoo is big and food lines eat into nap energy. After lunch, head back to your lodging for genuine downtime. Day 1 is for arriving, not conquering.

*Park before 9:30 a.m. on summer weekends; arriving early is the biggest stress-saver. After that it's all on foot, with the carousel cluster about 5 minutes from the zoo.*

## Day 2 — USS Midway Museum + the Embarcadero

### Anchor: USS Midway Museum

Climb through a retired aircraft carrier docked downtown at Navy Pier. Kids earn pilot wings in the Junior Pilot program at the information booth, and a family audio tour follows a sailor through the ship. The flight deck and its parked jets are the showstopper for the 9-year-old; the below-deck living quarters win over the 6-year-old. Budget 2–3 hours across the 60+ areas and let them set the pace.

### Backup: Seaport Village

*Easy backup \(or post-Midway wind-down\):*

After all the carrier stairs, walk the Embarcadero to Seaport Village: a flat, stroller-friendly waterfront strip with a hand-carved historic carousel, kite shops and easy dining. A low-stakes, just-wandering afternoon.

### Eat & rest

Casual, kid-easy food is everywhere at Seaport Village. Sit by the water, let them watch the boats, and keep the afternoon flat and slow.

*Midway to Seaport Village is a flat 10–15 minute waterfront walk, stroller-friendly the whole way.*

Day reference: 2

## Day 3 — Coronado by Ferry

### Anchor: Coronado Beach

Make the journey the activity. The bay ferry crosses from downtown to Coronado in about 15 minutes, the skyline shrinking behind you, and at this age a short boat ride beats a long drive. From the Coronado Ferry Landing, rent a surrey or bikes, or amble to wide, gentle Coronado Central Beach near the historic Hotel del Coronado. Bring sand toys: the beach afternoon is the downtime.

### Backup: Coronado Tidelands Park

*Easy backup \(if the beach is windy or crowded\):*

Coronado Tidelands Park, right by the ferry landing, has big open lawns, bridge views and room to run: calmer and more contained than the open beach, with easy parking and picnic spots.

### Eat & rest

Kid-friendly restaurants at the Ferry Landing mean lunch starts the moment you step off the boat.

*Tidelands Park is a short, flat walk from the landing. The beach by the Hotel del is a short ride or walk; rent a surrey if legs are tired.*

Day reference: 3

## Day 4 — La Jolla: Aquarium + Seals

### Anchor: Birch Aquarium at Scripps

Right-sized for kids: most families spend 1.5–2 hours, so it won't outlast anyone's attention. This hilltop aquarium, tied to real ocean research, has a two-story kelp forest tank, little blue penguins, a seadragon hall and step-ups so a 6-year-old can actually see in. At the outdoor Tide-Pool Plaza they touch sea stars and hermit crabs with a docent. Free three-hour parking and a reservation system keep the visit easy.

### Backup: La Jolla Cove

*Easy backup / pairing:*

Then drive down to the coast for seals and sea lions. From the Children's Pool, watch harbor seals haul out on the sand, then take the short, paved walk along Coast Boulevard to La Jolla Cove, where the sea lions hang out. The Children's Pool beach closes to people in pupping season \(roughly mid-December to mid-May\); you watch from above, the easiest view anyway.

### Eat & rest

Lunch in La Jolla Village, a few minutes from the coast. Midday sun on the bluffs is real, so keep the walk short and shaded, and head back in time for a pool break or a nap.

*The coast is a 5–10 minute drive from the aquarium, and parking near the Cove is tight, so go early. The Children's Pool-to-Cove walk is flat, paved and stroller-OK.*

Day reference: 4

## Day 5 — Old Town, then your pick

### Anchor: Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

A gentle final day, not another big push. Old Town is free, open-air and walkable: historic adobes, a working blacksmith, shops full of toys, and on Saturdays a free Junior Ranger program for ages 7–12, made for the 9-year-old. It's flat, shaded in spots and done in 2–3 hours. Start at the Robinson-Rose Visitor Center for a map of what's open.

### Backup: Liberty Public Market

*Easy backup \(a softer last day\):*

If everyone's worn out, swap in Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station in Point Loma: a relaxed food hall with dozens of easy choices, plenty of seating, wide lawns and a waterfront inlet to wander to. No agenda required.

### Eat & rest

Old Town is packed with kid-friendly Mexican spots where even picky eaters find something. With a late flight, a slow lunch closes the trip better than one more attraction.

*The free parking lots fill up, so arrive mid-morning. Liberty Station is about a 10-minute drive from Old Town.*

Day reference: 5

## Rainy day / heat-of-the-day indoor backups

San Diego is mild, but marine-layer mornings and hot afternoons happen. When one does:

- Fleet Science Center \(Balboa Park\): 100+ hands-on exhibits, a Tinkering Studio for building marble coasters, a Kid City zone for under-5s and an IMAX dome. Two to four hours indoors, and the pivot if rain washes out the zoo.
- The New Children's Museum \(downtown\): three floors of contemporary-art installations kids climb and build in, plus art studios and a kid-focused café, close to Seaport Village for a wet Day 2.
- Birch Aquarium and the Midway’s sheltered below-deck spaces work in bad weather too \(Days 2 and 4\).

## Where to eat

With two tired kids, eat by cluster rather than chasing single restaurants:

- Little Italy: India Street is lined with Italian restaurants. At long-running Filippi's Pizza Grotto you walk in through an Italian deli, and the pizza-and-pasta menu and casual room handle picky eaters easily.
- County Waterfront Park, next to Little Italy, has big bayfront lawns and a climbing-focused playground for running off lunch.
- Before you go, let each kid choose the day they most want to protect, lock the zoo morning and the Birch visit, and leave the backups for weather and moods.
