Magnolias opening on bare branches and air so clear you can see every cable on the Golden Gate Bridge: in February, San Francisco keeps its best weather secret badly. It's light-jacket mild, the summer fog is months away, and the city is green in a way it never is in August. The catch is the rainy season. A front arrives, it rains hard for half a day, then the sky opens into something spectacular. So each day holds its outdoor anchor loosely, keeps an indoor swap ready, and can be reordered around the forecast the night before. Each is one neighbourhood done slowly, with a short ride between. Good to know: the hills are real, and so is the wind at the water's edge; standing still at Crissy Field in a t-shirt is a rookie error.

## Day 1 — Golden Gate Park, in bloom

### Anchor: San Francisco Botanical Garden

*The botanical garden and the Japanese Tea Garden*

This is why you come in February. The garden's magnolia collection, one of the most significant outside China, flowers in the depths of winter, enormous pale blossoms opening over the lawns. A few minutes north, the Japanese Tea Garden, the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, laid out for the 1894 midwinter exposition, gives you a drum bridge, a pagoda, koi ponds and a tea house where you can share a pot while drizzle taps the roof. Go early: it feels very different with twenty people in it than with two hundred.

### Backup: Conservatory of Flowers

*a Victorian glasshouse instead*

When the rain arrives, this is the best hour in the park: still in the garden, entirely dry. The Conservatory of Flowers, a white wood-and-glass Victorian greenhouse from the 1870s and the oldest of its kind in the country, is warm, humid and full of orchids, palms and a lily pond, and grey-day light through the fogged glass is lovely.

### Eat & rest

Lunch on Irving Street in the Inner Sunset, just south, for ramen, dumplings and bakeries, or Clement Street in the Inner Richmond, just north, for dim sum, noodle houses and tea shops. Both are ten minutes on foot from the gates, and neither wants a reservation.

*Stay in the eastern half of the park, where both gardens, the de Young and the Conservatory are fifteen minutes apart on foot. Both gardens charge admission and sell tickets online.*

## Day 2 — The bridge on a clear day, then North Beach after dark

### Anchor: Palace of Fine Arts

Standing under the Golden Gate Bridge with the surf hitting the seawall is the best free thing in the city, and February brings the clearest air of the year for it. Begin at the Palace of Fine Arts, last survivor of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, its Beaux-Arts rotunda reflected in a lagoon of swans. Then walk west through Crissy Field, a former airfield turned shoreline park, the bridge growing ahead, to Fort Point, the brick Civil War-era fort beneath the southern anchorage. About two flat, paved miles; turn back whenever you like.

### Backup: Ferry Building Marketplace

*the Ferry Building instead*

If the waterfront is a wind tunnel, go east to the Ferry Building, the 1898 terminal under the clock tower: a long, high indoor hall of bakeries, oyster bars, cheesemongers and coffee, with the bay on one side. On Saturday mornings the farmers market wraps around it under awnings, and the F-line streetcars stop at the door.

### Eat & rest

Finish in North Beach, the most walkable dinner-and-a-drink neighbourhood in the city. Browse City Lights, the 1953 Beat-era bookshop, then have a drink at Vesuvio, a bar since 1948, next door. For the cold-night ritual, the Buena Vista Cafe has made Irish coffee on a long assembly line since 1952: crowded, touristy and worth it.

*The walk has no shelter, so check wind and forecast and bring a windproof layer. North Beach is a fifteen-minute ride east. Want the cable car? Ride it in the evening from Powell Street.*

## Day 3 — The Mission, murals, and a hilltop sunset

### Anchor: Mission Dolores Park

*Dolores Park, the murals, and the oldest building in the city*

The Mission sits in the city’s sunniest, most sheltered pocket, which matters most in February. Start on the slope of Dolores Park with the downtown skyline spread below, then walk two blocks to Mission Dolores, the adobe chapel completed in 1791 and the oldest intact building in San Francisco. Then go looking for murals: Balmy Alley, off 24th Street, painted continuously since the 1970s, and scrappier Clarion Alley between Mission and Valencia. Both are free and a block long; give them an hour and actually read them.

### Backup: Legion of Honor

*a museum on the cliffs instead*

If the last day is a washout, cross to the Legion of Honor on the bluff at Lincoln Park: European painting and sculpture, a cast of Rodin's Thinker in the courtyard, and windows onto the Pacific and the bridge. Art inside, dramatic ocean weather beyond the glass.

### Eat & rest

Sunset comes around a quarter to six. Watch it from Bernal Heights Park, a bare summit with a 360-degree view and far fewer people than Twin Peaks, or closer Corona Heights; bring something to sit on. Then dinner at Foreign Cinema, where films play on the wall of a heated courtyard, or Zuni Café, an institution since 1979.

*The Mission is flat; the sunset hills need a short ride. Evenings cool fast once the sun drops, so carry the layer you resented all day.*

## When the rain comes through \(indoor anchors\)

Expect at least one half-day of real rain. Beyond the Conservatory, the Ferry Building and the Legion of Honor:

- de Young Museum \(Golden Gate Park\): American art and global collections, topped by the free, glass-walled Hamon Observation Tower with a 360-degree view.
- SFMOMA \(SoMa\): one of the largest modern art museums in the country, with a good café for a long, dry afternoon.
- Grace Cathedral \(Nob Hill\): a huge Gothic-revival cathedral with gilded bronze doors and two labyrinths, one indoors, that anyone may walk.
- Top of the Mark \(Nob Hill\): a nineteenth-floor bar in a 1920s hotel, open since 1939, with windows on all sides. The best way to watch the city in the rain.

## Where to eat and drink

- Foreign Cinema and Zuni Café \(its wood-fired chicken is the one people plan trips around\) both book out for Valentine’s weekend; reserve weeks ahead.
- Caffe Trieste has pulled espresso since 1956, and Molinari Delicatessen, open since 1896, builds a sandwich the size of a forearm for a picnic: old Italian North Beach, still working.
- Distances are short but the hills are not. Rideshares and the historic F-line streetcars fill the gaps between neighbourhoods.
- Lock the two dinners first. Then check the forecast together each evening and decide which day tomorrow becomes.
