Adobe walls glowing in late light, a plate of green chile, a glass of something local: Santa Fe rewards a slow weekend far more than a packed one. The Plaza, Canyon Road and most of the galleries and restaurants below sit a stroll or a short ride apart, so two of the three days are car-optional; the wine-country dinner is worth its 10-minute drive. Good to know: the city sits at about 7,000 feet, so plan one real activity per half-day, drink more water than feels necessary, and let the afternoon light do the heavy lifting.

## Day 1 — Canyon Road, slowly

### Anchor: Canyon Road

No agenda, no tickets, just the two of you drifting in and out of open doors. Canyon Road is a half-mile of historic adobes packed with galleries, sculpture gardens and tucked-away patios, the highest concentration of art galleries in the country, and as much about the walk as the work. Most galleries keep daytime hours, so come in the late afternoon when the light hits the adobe. It's a gentle uphill with uneven sidewalks in spots, 15 minutes on foot or a 5-minute ride from the Plaza.

### Backup: Canyon Road

*Easy backup: a single garden gallery + a long lunch*

If energy or weather isn't cooperating, skip the full walk. Pick one gallery with a sculpture garden, then settle into an unhurried lunch on Canyon Road instead of covering ground.

### Eat & rest

Lunch at The Compound, a refined midday menu with a courtyard worth lingering in when the weather is good. Dinner is Geronimo, the intimate French-Southwest landmark of low light and fireplaces that has been the romantic Canyon Road dinner for years; reserve ahead.

## Day 2 — Plaza, O'Keeffe, and a rooftop sunset

### Anchor: Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Spend an hour here and every mesa and adobe you see afterwards resonates a little more. The museum holds the definitive collection of the artist most associated with New Mexico's light and landscape, and it's compact enough to absorb without museum fatigue. The galleries are small and fill up, so buy timed tickets in advance. It's on Johnson Street, a 3-minute walk off the Plaza, with no on-site parking.

### Backup: Palace of the Governors

*Easy backup: the Plaza itself*

No ticket needed. The Plaza and the Palace of the Governors, the oldest continuously occupied public building in the U.S., anchor the walkable historic core, and Native artists sell their work under the Palace portal most days. A low-effort, high-charm morning.

### Eat & rest

Start at Cafe Pasqual's, a block off the Plaza; it's walk-in only, so put your name down early. For sunset, the open-air Bell Tower Bar atop La Fonda faces west over the mountains, runs roughly spring through fall and only until sunset: go early, bring a layer. Then small plates and Spanish wine at La Boca.

## Day 3 — Wine and the long view

### Anchor: Arroyo Vino

Save the best glass for last. On the west edge of town, a 10-minute drive from the Plaza, Arroyo Vino pairs one of the best wine lists in Santa Fe with a seasonal New American menu. Browse the attached shop before or after, and ask the staff for a New Mexico bottle to take home. The shop and restaurant keep different hours, so check before you go; this is the one meal where a car or a ride earns its keep.

### Backup: Cross of the Martyrs

*Easy backup: stay in the core*

Not up for the drive? Stay on foot, catch the galleries you missed, and take your wine at a downtown bar. At sunset, climb to the Cross of the Martyrs, a short, steep 5–10 minute walk on a paved path just blocks from the Plaza, for a wide west-facing view over the city. It's your fallback, too, if the Bell Tower is closed.

### Eat & rest

Keep lunch light near the Plaza so the wine at Arroyo Vino is the meal that matters.

## Rainy day or heat-of-the-afternoon backup \(indoors\)

Afternoons can turn hot and bright, and summer brings brief monsoon storms. Two ways to get out of it:

- Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return: a sprawling, immersive walk-through art installation across dozens of rooms, surreal and hands-on, a short drive from downtown.
- New Mexico Museum of Art – Vladem Contemporary \(Railyard district\): the museum’s contemporary space in a converted warehouse, an easy walk or short ride from the Plaza.

## Where to eat

- Book Geronimo and Arroyo Vino before you arrive, especially for a weekend, and keep lunches loose; Cafe Pasqual's takes walk-ins only.
- Then choose together which evening gets the rooftop and which gets the wine list, and let the galleries fill everything in between.
