Strasbourg calls itself the Capitale de Noël, and in Advent the half-timbered old town earns the title: squares full of stalls, lanes strung with lights, canals holding the reflection of it all. Its Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, and the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is compact enough that you never rush between neighborhoods. Expect cold, damp Alsatian weather and crowds that build on evenings and weekends. Each day pairs one anchor with an indoor backup, because the cathedral and museums can carry a day on their own. Bring warm layers and boots for cobblestones, and keep the evenings unscheduled: Petite France after dark with a cup of vin chaud is most of the point.

## Day 1 — Place Kléber and the cathedral

### Anchor: Place Kléber

Begin under the Grand Sapin de Noël, the towering fir raised each Advent in Place Kléber, the city's largest square, ringed with stalls of ornaments, mulled wine and Alsatian crafts. Follow the smaller market clusters to the cathedral, whose single spire was for centuries the tallest building in the Christian world. Step inside at midday, when the astronomical clock's procession of the apostles runs, then come back to Place de la Cathédrale at dusk as the stalls light up and the floodlit façade rises into the dark.

### Backup: Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame

If the cold bites, slip into the Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame beside the cathedral. Its medieval and Renaissance buildings hold original sculptures from the cathedral façade alongside Rhenish and Alsatian art: a quiet, intimate half-hour before you head back out to the lights.

### Eat & rest

Find a winstub, Strasbourg's cozy neighborhood bistro, for choucroute garnie or a warm tarte flambée with a glass of Alsatian Riesling. Take the long way home past the lit cathedral.

*Place Kléber and the cathedral are about 10 minutes apart on foot. The lights peak after dusk, so there is no need to see everything by daylight.*

## Day 2 — Petite France and a canal walk

### Anchor: Petite France, Strasbourg

*Petite France, and the Ponts Couverts at dusk*

Give the day to Petite France, where half-timbered houses lean over narrow canals once worked by the city's tanners, millers and fishermen. In Advent its lanes and waterside paths are strung with lights and quieter than the main squares, made for wandering as a pair. Follow the water to the Ponts Couverts and their medieval watchtowers, then climb onto the Barrage Vauban, a 17th-century fortified dam whose rooftop terrace looks back over the old town's roofs to the cathedral spire.

### Backup: Palais Rohan

On a wet day, the Palais Rohan, an 18th-century bishops' palace by the cathedral, gathers decorative arts, fine arts and archaeology under one roof. Its lavish period rooms make even a short visit feel grand.

### Eat & rest

Stay in Petite France for dinner: small restaurants serving Alsatian classics, a window table over the lit canal, and a glass of Alsatian Pinot Gris.

*Petite France, the Ponts Couverts and the Barrage Vauban make a 15-minute walking loop. The canals and the open-air terrace catch the wind, so wait for a calm spell.*

## Day 3 — Place Broglie and a last mulled wine

### Anchor: Place Broglie

Place Broglie, one of the city's grandest formal squares, was the Christkindelsmärik's long-standing home before the market spread to Place Kléber and the cathedral. Its stalls still lean toward Alsatian food and gifts, and the crowds run a little lighter: the spot for a final vin chaud and the last souvenirs. Then let the morning go unstructured, following the lights and the smell of roasting chestnuts through whichever lanes you haven't walked yet.

### Backup: Musée Alsacien

Rather be indoors? The Musée Alsacien fills a row of connected old town houses with traditional Alsatian domestic life, crafts and costume, a small, warm museum for an easy last morning.

### Eat & rest

A last winstub lunch: one more tarte flambée, or a bowl of baeckeoffe, before you go.

*Place Broglie is a short walk from Place Kléber and the cathedral. If time is tight, trim this morning rather than Day 1 or Day 2.*

## What to eat and drink at the markets

Alsace gives the German market staples a French accent:

- Vin chaud: Alsatian mulled wine in a souvenir mug, often spiced differently from the German versions next door.
- Vin chaud blanc: the region’s mulled white wine; try it beside the red.
- Bretzel: the Alsatian pretzel, warm from the stall, plain or with cheese.
- Bredele: small traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies, sold at stalls and bakeries all season.

## Staying warm

- Winstubs are heated and intimate; make one long winstub dinner part of the plan rather than a fallback.
- The old town is compact enough that you rarely need transit between the main squares. Decide together which evening is for the cathedral lights and which for the canals, and leave the third free to wander.
