Toronto keeps its autumn in the ravines. The Don Valley, the creeks and the wooded edges of High Park turn from the end of September through the middle of October, and for a few weeks the whole city looks like the postcard. Then it cools off fast: early October and early November are different trips, and the later one needs more indoor plan. This weekend pairs one outdoor day with two anchors that work whatever the lake is doing, pitched at kids around six and nine. Pick one thing a day, keep afternoons loose, and dress everyone a layer warmer than the forecast, because the wind at the waterfront is not the wind in the forecast.

## How to use this plan

Check the forecast the night before and give the park-and-ferry day the better of the clear mornings, keeping the museum in reserve. The subway covers almost everything, so skip the car. On a holiday weekend, book big indoor tickets the day before.

## Day 1 — Dinosaurs, bats and a museum built for a cold morning

### Anchor: Royal Ontario Museum

Open with the ROM, the city's best museum and the surest thing to have in your pocket on a cold morning. Dinosaur skeletons, an Egyptian gallery with real mummies, and a dark, slightly spooky walk-through bat cave that most nine-year-olds remember longest. Treat it as a half day: two or three galleries the kids choose, then out. Philosopher's Walk, the wooded path running down beside the museum, is one of the nicest ten minutes in the city in October.

### Backup: Bata Shoe Museum

*Easy backup*

If holiday crowds have packed the ROM, walk one block west on Bloor to the Bata Shoe Museum: four thousand years of footwear, including some truly strange things kids like pointing at. It takes about an hour, exactly the right size when the main plan has gone sideways.

### Eat & rest

Yorkville, just north, has plenty of casual food; the Annex, a few minutes west along Bloor, is cheaper and easier with kids. Then slow down: sunset is creeping earlier, and an hour of downtime now saves the evening.

*Museum subway station opens at the door, its platform dressed like the galleries: a free thrill on arrival. Stroller-friendly. Half a day.*

## Day 2 — High Park at peak colour

### Anchor: High Park

Give the best-looking day to High Park, the city's largest park and the easiest place to show kids a Canadian autumn without leaving town: oak woodland, trails down to Grenadier Pond, hills that make a walk feel like an expedition. Two stops make it a family day. High Park Zoo is a small, free paddock trail with bison, llamas, peacocks and capybaras, and the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, a big wooden castle, absorbs an hour on its own. Go in the morning and be out before anyone gets cold.

### Backup: Evergreen Brick Works

*Easy backup*

Evergreen Brick Works, a former brick factory in the Don Valley, is the other great autumn outing. The old kilns and sheds are half-covered, so drizzle doesn't cancel it; the easy ravine trails and ponds behind hold the best fall colour in the city; and a farmers' market runs on the weekend, so check which day before planning lunch around it.

### Eat & rest

Bloor West Village and Roncesvalles Avenue flank the park with relaxed cafés and bakeries, the obvious lunch on the way out; at the Brick Works, the market and café cover it. Either way, get somewhere warm mid-afternoon.

*High Park station on the subway, or the Queen Street streetcar. Main paths are paved, but routes down to the pond are steep. Bring gloves; October mornings bite. Half a day.*

## Day 3 — The island ferry and the harbour

### Anchor: Toronto Islands

The ferry across the harbour is the best fifteen minutes in Toronto with children: a clear, cold crossing with the whole skyline behind you. After summer the islands are all but empty, with flat car-free paths, beaches to walk \(not swim\), big trees turning, and the Franklin Children's Garden on Centre Island for the younger one. The amusement park and some ferry routes wind down after the early-autumn long weekend, and food thins out with them, so check which routes are sailing and pack what you need.

### Backup: Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

*Easy backup*

Wind up or rain set in? Don't fight the harbour. Ripley's Aquarium of Canada, at the base of the CN Tower ten minutes' walk from the ferry terminal, is fully indoors; the moving walkway through the shark tunnel is what kids talk about afterwards, and touch tanks suit the smaller one. Book online on wet weekends.

### Eat & rest

St. Lawrence Market, ten minutes' walk inland from the docks, is the weekend's best lunch: a historic hall of prepared food, bakeries and the peameal bacon sandwich the city is known for. It isn't open every day, so check first; the pedestrian-only Distillery District nearby is the fallback.

*Ferries leave from the foot of Bay Street; buy tickets before you queue and allow for waits at each end. Flat and stroller-friendly. Dress for open water. Half a day.*

## Timing a fall weekend in Toronto

- Colour in the ravines and High Park usually peaks through the middle of October. Late September is still mostly green, and by early November the trees are largely bare.
- Canadian Thanksgiving, the second Monday of October, brings the busiest long weekend of the season and often the best colour. Book anything ticketed well ahead and expect holiday hours.
- Ferry routes, park shuttles and patio dining all wind down through the autumn, and sunset comes early. Put outdoor anchors in the middle of the day.
- A US school break weekend is a good time to come and a bad time to arrive without bookings; Toronto is a short drive from the border, and its museums fill accordingly.

## Cold and rainy-day backups \(indoors\)

You will need at least one of these. All work for six-to-nine-year-olds:

- The ROM \(Day 1\) and Ripley’s Aquarium \(Day 3\), the two strongest.
- Casa Loma, a real Gothic Revival castle above the city with towers, tunnels and stables: the one attraction where the nine-year-old leads the tour.
- Hockey Hall of Fame downtown, where memorabilia plus shooting and goaltending games kids can actually play make it work at this age.

## Where to see fall colour around the city

- Riverdale Park and the Cabbagetown ravine: a classic skyline view over turning trees, with Riverdale Farm, a free working farm, right beside it.
- The Scarborough Bluffs on the eastern lakeshore: cliffs, a park at the bottom and long views. It’s a drive rather than a transit trip; keep kids well back from the edge.
- Before you go, let each kid name the one thing they won’t miss: the bat cave, the capybaras or the ferry. Promise it, and your three anchors are chosen.
