August makes this city miserable on foot; fall makes it easy. This weekend skips the monuments and the timed-entry Smithsonians for three slower stops: the towpath, a garden that closes at six and rewards arriving near then, and, if you want a day away, the drive along Shenandoah's Skyline Drive. Good to know: Georgetown has no Metro stop of its own. Walk in from Foggy Bottom, about 20 minutes. ## How to use this plan Buy Dumbarton Oaks garden tickets online before you go; there is no sale at the gate. If Day 3 goes to Shenandoah, give it the whole day, and check the NPS fall color report that week: color reaches the ridge well before the valley below. ## Day 1 — Georgetown and the C&O Canal towpath ### Anchor: C&O Canal towpath, Georgetown *The C&O Canal towpath* Twenty minutes in, the noise of M Street is gone. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath follows a still, narrow waterway that was a working 19th-century transport canal and now runs for miles west of Georgetown, flat and tree-lined, with the canopy turning through October. There's no ticket and no set distance: walk until it feels right and turn back, or carry on toward Fletcher's Cove for a longer afternoon. You will lose an hour here without noticing. ### Backup: Georgetown Waterfront Park *The waterfront instead* If rain has left the towpath muddy, Georgetown Waterfront Park runs along the Potomac a few blocks south: paved, open, with river views the canal lacks and an easy stroll back up into the neighborhood's shops and restaurants. ### Eat & rest M Street and the blocks around it hold Georgetown's densest run of restaurants, from casual to a proper occasion. Book the first night, or don't, depending on how the day went. *The towpath is flat but unpaved in stretches: good shoes, not heels. Half a day.* Day reference: 1 ## Day 2 — Dumbarton Oaks, timed for late afternoon ### Anchor: Dumbarton Oaks Come for the last hour, when low light slants across the terraces. A few blocks above the canal, Dumbarton Oaks lays ten acres of formal gardens around a Georgetown mansion: boxwood, a wisteria-draped arbor, a rose garden, stone stairs cut into the hillside. Fall threads turning trees through all that structure, without the Tidal Basin's spring crowds. The gardens open 2 to 6pm, Tuesday through Sunday, in the regular season through October. Tickets, around $15, are sold online only. ### Backup: Montrose Park Tickets gone? Montrose Park sits right next door, free and unticketed, and connects to the wooded Dumbarton Oaks Park trail below: the same hillside, looser and quieter, with no reservation. ### Eat & rest Walk back down into Georgetown for dinner, or stay up the hill: the smaller cluster on Wisconsin Avenue near the park is calmer than M Street on a fall weekend. *No Metro nearby: pair it with a Georgetown walk, or take a short cab from Dupont Circle. Half a day.* Day reference: 2 ## Day 3 — Optional: Shenandoah and Skyline Drive ### Anchor: Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park *Skyline Drive, by car* One ridge, 105 miles of road, more than seventy overlooks. Skyline Drive follows the crest of the Blue Ridge, and Shenandoah’s Front Royal entrance is roughly 75 to 90 minutes from DC via I-66. Color usually peaks on the high ground around October 20, with the valley holding into late October, so how far south you drive changes what you see. You need a car; there is no train or transit. Entry is $30 per vehicle for seven days, online or at the gate. ### Backup: Great Falls Park, Virginia *Great Falls instead* Short on time? Great Falls Park, on the Virginia side about 20 miles and half an hour from downtown, gives you river rapids, gorge overlooks and woods turning through October. The $20 vehicle fee also covers the C&O Canal park on the Maryland side, if you want the canal's wilder upstream stretch after Day 1's towpath. ### Eat & rest Front Royal has an easy lunch before or after the drive, and a short winery stop near the entrance is a good way to end the day. Great Falls has little food on site, so eat in McLean or back in the city. *Cell coverage in the park is unreliable, so download directions before you enter. The 35 mph limit is strictly enforced. Full day for Shenandoah, half for Great Falls.* Day reference: 3 ## Timing a fall weekend in Washington Leaf peak, garden hours and a road-closing marathon all hinge on the date: - The city's tree canopy usually peaks late October into early November; Shenandoah's higher elevations turn a week or two earlier, around October 20. - Dumbarton Oaks' regular-season hours and $15 admission run through the end of October; check the garden's November schedule before a late-month visit. - A large marathon closes roads across the Mall and into Virginia one Sunday in late October.
