South Bank, London
Walk the South Bank, the riverside promenade running from the London Eye past the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe toward Tower Bridge — one continuous, mostly traffic-free stretch with the whole skyline unfolding across the water the entire way. It's an easy couple of hours at a wander's pace, with buskers, secondhand book stalls under Waterloo Bridge, and benches facing the river whenever you want to just sit. Logistics: flat, paved, and easy underfoot the whole way; allow two to three hours if you stop along the route.
End at Tower Bridge, the Victorian bascule bridge that's become as much a symbol of the city as Big Ben, with the Tower of London — the medieval fortress right beside it on the same, north bank of the river. Crossing the bridge on foot as the light starts to change, with the Tower's stone walls close by and the City's modern skyline rising behind it, is one of the better free views in London.
