Berlin for couples: pick a Kiez and stay in it

Berlin has no single center, and the visitors who enjoy it least are the ones crossing the city three times a day. Pick a Kiez and let it set the pace: Prenzlauer Berg for calm streets and long café mornings, Kreuzberg and Neukölln for late dinners and canal-side evenings, Charlottenburg out west for the grander, quieter version of the city. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run frequently and are the right way to move between them.

For the history, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße explains the wall — the death strip, the tunnels, the individual streets it cut in half — far better than the East Side Gallery, which is a photo stop rather than a museum. Museum Island is the rainy-afternoon answer, and the Brandenburg Gate deserves five minutes and no more. Together those fill a day without the death-march version of a Berlin itinerary.

The city's rhythm surprises people. Shops close on Sundays, which is an argument for a park day: Tempelhofer Feld, the runways of a former airport now open to walk and cycle, or the towpaths along the Landwehrkanal and the Spree, with the Mauerpark flea market as the standing Sunday alternative. Dinner runs late and reservations help at anywhere well-known, and some bars and imbiss counters still prefer cash. Winter is dark and cold, and it changes what a good day here looks like.
