Cambridge is not one downtown but a chain of squares strung along the Red Line, and picking the right one sets the tone of the evening. Harvard Square is bookstores, coffee and street music; Central Square is louder and cheaper with the live-music rooms; Inman Square is the quiet dinner; Kendall Square is glass, MIT and the river. Davis Square, one stop further into Somerville, belongs on the same list.

The best free hour in the city is the Charles. Walk the Cambridge bank and cross at the Weeks Footbridge around dusk, when the Boston skyline lights up across the water. Mount Auburn Cemetery, west of Harvard Square, is a garden cemetery and one of the great quiet walks in New England — spectacular in spring bloom and again in October foliage. For a rainy afternoon, the Harvard Art Museums are the obvious indoor anchor.

Two practicalities save the trip. Do not drive: parking is scarce, mostly resident-permit, and the Red Line links everything you actually want. And check the university calendar — commencement week in May and the late-August move-in stretch fill the hotels and the restaurants at once, while deep winter is genuinely cold enough that an indoor anchor per day is a plan, not a fallback.
