The peninsula is small enough to walk end to end, which is the whole appeal. South of Broad — the Battery, White Point Garden, the Rainbow Row block — is at its best early, when the light is low and the streets are empty; by mid-morning it is a queue of carriage tours. Upper King Street is where most of the dining energy sits, and the better-known rooms there book out weeks ahead, so reserve before you arrive rather than hoping to walk in.

To get past the postcard blocks, walk west and north: Cannonborough-Elliottborough for lower-key dinners, and Hampton Park with the Wagener Terrace streets around it for the slow morning that the historic district does not really offer. At the other end of the day, the pedestrian path on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge gives you the city and the harbor from above, and Shem Creek on the Mount Pleasant side is the easy waterfront alternative to a downtown dinner.

Timing decides a Charleston trip. Spring and mid-fall are the windows worth planning around; July and August are heavy heat and humidity, so put anything outdoors before 11am and treat the middle of the day as indoor time. A beach afternoon at Sullivan's Island or Folly Beach is a short drive but a real one — and if you are driving at all, use a garage, because peninsula street parking is a poor use of a good day.
