The street grid confuses visitors for about an hour and then becomes the easiest navigation in the country: addresses count blocks out from Temple Square, so "300 South" is three blocks south of center. Downtown covers the landmarks, but the neighborhood pockets are where the evenings are — the 9th and 9th and 15th and 15th corners, and Sugar House further south, all carry independent restaurants without the convention-hotel crowd.

The mountains are the reason to be here and they are close: Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons start roughly half an hour from downtown, with Millcreek Canyon closer still for a short walk. Winter powder days bring genuine canyon traffic and occasional road holds, so go early or not at all that morning. Winter also brings valley inversion, when the haze sits low for days — driving up a canyon is the reliable way to get above it and find sun.

For slower days, Liberty Park and Red Butte Garden up by the University of Utah are the pleasant, unhurried options, and Antelope Island on the Great Salt Lake gives you big open sunsets over the water. Be honest with yourself about the lake in late summer, when brine flies and the smell off the shallows are real; spring and fall are far kinder. Park City is close enough for a day trip in either season.
