Barri Gòtic
Spend the day getting lost, on purpose, in the Barri Gòtic — the medieval core of the old city, where narrow stone lanes open unexpectedly onto small squares and the Barcelona Cathedral rises out of nowhere above the rooftops. There's no efficient route through here; the pleasure is in doubling back, finding a courtyard neither of you noticed the first pass, and letting the neighborhood set the pace. The Plaça Reial, a palm-lined square just off Las Ramblas, is a natural place to stop for a drink partway through. Logistics: comfortable shoes matter — the cobblestones are uneven and the lanes are all pedestrian, so there's no shortcut by car or bike.
Time your way out to reach Las Ramblas as the light starts to fade. The famous boulevard is touristy by day, but the energy at dusk — street performers, the flower stalls closing up, the crowd thickening toward evening — is worth the fifteen minutes it takes to walk its length toward the harbor.
