Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt
Start at the market that fills Marienplatz, Munich's central square, every Advent season — one of Germany's oldest and most storied Christmas markets, with a towering tree at its center and stalls selling ornaments, gingerbread, and mulled wine beneath the neo-Gothic spires of the New Town Hall. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel in the tower performs its small mechanical show at set times daily, with figures re-enacting historical scenes, and it's worth timing your visit to catch it once.
From the square, walk the short distance to Frauenkirche, Munich's twin-towered Gothic cathedral and the city's most recognizable landmark, before wandering into the lanes around Viktualienmarkt, the city's long-running food and produce market, which runs its own smaller, quieter Christmas stalls alongside the regular vendors. It's a good contrast to the crowds at Marienplatz — smaller, more local, and easy to linger in.
