The shape of the trip

Arrive Friday afternoon, check into your cabin, and take in alpine lake panoramas from the Heavenly Mountain Gondola before settling into fire pits at Stateline.

Spend Saturday exploring the snowy granite rim of Emerald Bay on snowshoes, warming up with hearty pub dishes, and heading into an evening out together.

Close out Sunday racing tubes down high-elevation lanes at Echo Summit, then regrouping over local craft beers before hitting Highway 50.

Use this plan as your shared itinerary anchor. Skiers can hit the lifts while non-skiers take the gondola or snowshoe routes, regrouping smoothly for meals.

Day 1

Gondola Panoramas, Village Fires, and First Pints

Ease into altitude with alpine lake vistas that work for skiers and non-skiers alike.

Heavenly Mountain Gondola, South Lake TahoeAnchor

Heavenly Mountain Gondola

Ride 2.4 miles up to panoramic observation decks 9,000 feet above the lake.

Board the eight-passenger cabins in Heavenly Village and glide 2.4 miles up the mountainside to 9,123 feet. The mid-station observation platform opens up sweeping views across the cobalt water and snow-dusted Sierra crest. It is the easiest way to give everyone in your group the big alpine vista without requiring lift passes or ski boots. Check wind and weather holds in the morning, as high Sierra gusts can pause lift operations.

Heavenly Village Ice Rink

Glide under string lights at the open-air rink in the center of the village.

If upper-mountain winds shut down gondola operations, gather your crew at the open-air skating rink in the village center. The rink sits ringed by string lights, shops, and stone fire pits. Skate rentals are available on-site, letting everyone get outside on the ice without driving mountain passes.

Eat & rest

Warm up around outdoor fire pits at South of North Brewing Co. with small-batch ales and pretzels, or share garlic cheese bread and specialty pies at Base Camp Pizza Co. in the village.

How to pace it

Keep Friday afternoon relaxed to let flatlanders acclimate to the 6,200-foot lake elevation.

Day 2

Emerald Bay Snowshoeing and Cabin Comforts

Head west along the lake for dramatic granite scenery before an easy evening together.

Emerald Bay Lookout, South Lake TahoeAnchor

Emerald Bay Lookout

Overlook snow-draped granite cliffs, Fannette Island, and turquoise water.

Drive north on Highway 89 to Inspiration Point to take in Lake Tahoe's most famous inlet draped in fresh snow. Strap on snowshoes to trace the ridge toward Eagle Falls or follow the snowy fire road down toward Vikingsholm. The contrast between the deep turquoise water and white granite boulders makes every step worth the trek. Check Caltrans road conditions before departing, as steep Highway 89 sections close during heavy snowfall.

Taylor Creek Sno-Park, South Lake TahoeBackup

Taylor Creek Sno-Park

Trek gentle pine-shaded snowshoe paths toward Fallen Leaf Lake.

When winter road closures block Highway 89 past Camp Richardson, divert to Taylor Creek Sno-Park. Flat, pine-fringed trails weave past Taylor Creek toward Fallen Leaf Lake, framed by Mount Tallac. The level terrain suits mixed-ability friend groups who want snow time without steep avalanche exposure. A California Sno-Park permit is required on your dashboard.

Eat & rest

Regroup for dinner at MacDuff's Public House, where cottage pies, wood-fired pizzas, and draft ales satisfy big appetites after a cold day on the snow.

How to pace it

Arrive at trailheads before 9:30 AM to secure plowed parking spaces before lots fill.

Day 3

Echo Summit Sledding and the Farewell Taproom

Finish the weekend racing down groomed tubing lanes before heading home.

Adventure Mountain Lake Tahoe

Fly down groomed tubing lanes at 7,400 feet atop Echo Summit.

Head to Echo Summit along Highway 50 to Adventure Mountain, a dedicated snow-play park perched at 7,400 feet. The hill maintains up to 15 groomed tubing runs where friends can race side by side down steep chutes. Tubes are available for rent, and the day lodge offers a warm fire and hot drinks between runs. It delivers mountain thrills without the price or complexity of resort lift tickets.

Gather around the huge open-flame grill for customizable group bowls.

If whiteout mountain conditions derail high-elevation sledding, move lunch indoors to FiRE+iCE in Heavenly Village. The interactive open grill lets each person build their own bowl from noodles, meats, and sauces before cooks sear it over flames. It accommodates diverse dietary preferences in large groups effortlessly.

Eat & rest

Toast your last afternoon at South Lake Brewing Company's main taproom, playing board games and sipping local IPAs accompanied by rotating food truck bites.

How to pace it

Depart Echo Summit before Sunday afternoon commuter gridlock builds on westbound Highway 50.

Cabin logistics & splitting costs

Coordinating a winter rental works best with clear ground rules set in advance.

  • Book cabins with dedicated driveway snow plowing, an outdoor hot tub, and at least two full bathrooms for eight people.
  • Set up a shared payment kitty or app tab on Friday to log group groceries, firewood bundles, and Sno-Park passes seamlessly.
  • Assign rotation pairs for kitchen cleanup and hot tub maintenance so cabin chores never fall on one host.

Winter mountain driving & chain rules

Sierra winter storms demand preparation regardless of your vehicle's drive type.

  • Caltrans enforces mandatory tire chains during storms on Highway 50 and Interstate 80; carry cables sized for your tires even with AWD.
  • Download offline maps before ascending the pass, as cold mountain air drains cell batteries and spotty signals happen along Highway 89.
  • Keep an emergency car kit with heavy gloves, an ice scraper, a small snow shovel, water, and warm blankets.
